We're more than a credit union. We're a group of people dedicated to helping people in the Midlands of South Carolina.
About us
In 1955, 15 civilian employees at Shaw Air Force base in Sumter, South Carolina pooled their money to charter SAFE Federal Credit Union. Since then, SAFE has grown to over 130,000 members and just over $1.6 billion in assets. SAFE is the largest Midlands based credit union with 18 branches in eight counties in South Carolina. SAFE exists only to serve our members, and when you join, you also become an owner. Our not-for-profit structure allows our members to enjoy generally higher dividends on savings, lower loan interest rates, and fewer fees. And you can be sure your money is safe with us, as all deposits are insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

Our young friends at Sumter’s Lemira Elementary School learned a LOT yesterday as we taught the importance of saving money and the value of different coin denominations. There was even Math Bingo to add some fun and the chance to win a super-cool SAFE piggy bank. A big thank you to Lemira Elementary for inviting us!

Over 150 Midlands leaders joined us Tuesday as SAFE sponsored the Greater Cayce-West Columbia Chamber Breakfast. This was the latest stop for the South Carolina Chamber Grassroots Tour where representatives provided updates and news for the business community of our beautiful state. Spoiler alert: business in the South Carolina Midlands is on the move!

Members of SAFE’s leadership team carried the “People Helping People” credit union message to Washington last week as part of the annual Hike The Hill event led by the Carolinas Credit Union League. Credit unions from throughout the Carolinas participated in this opportunity to update the states’ Senators and Representatives on the pressing issues affecting credit unions and every credit union member.

Tuesday marked two years since SHE (See Her Empowered) made its Sumter debut. SAFE remains a proud co-sponsor for SHE which drew 110 women to hear inspiring stories from the women stationed at Shaw Air Force Base. A huge thank you to Major Clancy Kimber, Major Claire Randolph, and Captain Kacie Rempel for taking time to share their perspectives. They are a reminder to never let circumstances hold us back, maintain a positive mindset, and always remain humble.

Wow! SAFE's Easy Street members really know how to bring the energy and excitement! Nearly 250 members were in glamorous Vegas attire and ready to enter the city of lights. The food was delicious, the entertainment was top-notch, and the entire night was unforgettable. Stay tuned for more Easy Street events in 2025!
