The Safe Operating Speed Alliance (SOSA) released its 5-step plan for saving lives and addressing the speeding epidemic to USDOT yesterday. Speeding remains a leading cause of crashes and the latest data on 2020 roadway fatalities suggest it was a major factor in the risk taking on our highways during the pandemic which led to a record increase in the fatality rate. Please see below our 5-step plan to prevent speeding and save lives. #safety
Safe Operating Speed Alliance
Public Safety
Save lives and prevent injuries by eliminating speeding.
About us
Who we are? We are an alliance of organizations with a common goal to once and for all address the speeding epidemic. Over 10,000 people die each year in speed-related crashes and that number has relatively unchanged over the last few decades. The founding members of the alliance have diverse and complimentary expertise that enables deeper understanding of the systemic causes of speeding. We work with lawmakers, transportation associations, insurance carriers and individual transportation companies to promote policy, technological and behavioral solutions. Why Now? Because the problem is getting worse. Fatalities due to truck crashes increased 48% from 2009 to 2019. The latest highway fatality data from the National Safety Council comparing the fatality rate for the first six month of 2020 to the first six months of 2019 shows a 20% increase in fatalities with less vehicle miles traveled. Contrary to expectations, speed-related incidents have increased even more during the pandemic. The acceleration of e-commerce has resulted in more vehicles on roads, an increase in inexperienced drivers, and ever-shrinking delivery deadlines—the perfect recipe for an escalation in speeding. The current “solutions” are clearly not working. It’s time for a new and bolder approach. Advocacy Goals 1. Require Speed Limiter Be Used on Class 7 & 8 Trucks – encourage passage of the Cullum Owings Large Truck Safe Operating Speed Act 2. Promote adoption of smart speed limiter technology – encourage insurance companies to factor in usage during underwriting and recognition by FMCSA for beyond compliance 3. Promote investment to address infrastructure needs and support research/review of speed limits and methodology for setting or adjusting them 4. Encourage transportation companies to address organizational systems that encourage risky behavior and speeding, for example pay-by-the-mile, on-time incentives, and broader safety leadership and safety culture issues

Pairing in-vehicle safety technology and behavioral science holds the key to putting an end to traffic violence on our roadways. It all starts and can end with eliminating speeding the number 1 cause of harm on our roadways. #visionzero #roadtozero #SafeSpeed #Safety #fleetsafety
Looking forward to presenting at NSC Congress in Orlando on Monday September 16th at 4PM, Session #47 with Bryan Shelton from Aubrey Daniels on the impact of pairing In-vehicle Safety Technology and Behavioral Science. Saving lives and preventing harm on our roadways is within our grasp. Please have a look at the attached 5 step plan. As a society and as advocates we need to find the courage and will to fight for the needed changes to help prevent traffic violence on our roadways. If you want learn more about how we can work together on this please message me or if you will be participating at NSC congress please attend our session. #safety #visionzero #roadtozero #safespeed #fleetsafety

Speeding is the number one factor and cause of the harm and traffic violence. If you operate a fleet of vehicles you can help put a stop to this by taking action now. You don't need to wait for the OEMs to add ISA to cars, trucks or buses and replace your vehicles. SafeSpeed ISA can easily be retrofitted onto most vehicles making them safer and helping to prevent harm. #safety #roadtozero #visionzero #safespeed
In Vox, I wrote about how absurd -- and dangerous -- it is that cars can be driven 50 mph+ over the speed limit. It's time to require vehicle speed limiters. https://lnkd.in/eiTNGiAk

Important work by TSR member MAGTEC to bring its unique ISA safety technology to NYC school buses. With this project, NYC Citywide Administrative Services continues to demonstrate its leadership and creativity in safety. TSR is excited to work with both partners on this and other school bus safety initiatives. Read more:

In 2024 let’s start at the top (speed) to lower large truck operating speeds, crash severity and risk.
The epidemic of speeding and risky driving isn't going to end unless we begin to address the behavior of speeding. Simple technology already in place on nearly all large trucks and buses can make a lifesaving difference now. Don't be fooled by the misinformation. Please have a look at the facts !

Vehicle Speed is at the center of our roadway safety problems and a causal factor in 33% of the roadway crashes and fatalities. Nearly all drivers who speed do so intentionally. This kind of unsafe behavioral choice is best managed by preventing it from occurring. Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) is the the only safety solution that actually prevents the speeding behavior. It is retrofittable and easily installed in most vehicles. If you want to learn how we are helping NYC to prevent 99% vehicle overspeed with our SafeSpeed ISA please visit us at MAGTEC.com or message me to start preventing speeding in your fleet. #safety #roadtozero #visionzero #safespeed
Safer speeds are a central component of the Safe System approach. In a new report, members of the Road to Zero Coalition are urging automakers, regulators and fleet operators to promote available technologies that can help address one of our biggest highway safety challenges. Speeding and aggressive driving are at the center of our roadway safety problems. Much of the harm caused by these unsafe driving behaviors could be prevented if we made better use of currently available vehicle safety technology.
Behavioral choices by drivers are responsible for the epidemic of speeding and aggressive driving we witness on our roadways every day. Many of the 42,000 people who died last year from crashes would be alive today and with their families and loved ones if available vehicle safety technology was in use as standard equipment in cars, trucks and buses. The reason this technology works so well is it either prevents the at-risk driving behavior or greatly mitigates the likelihood and/or severity of a crash. In fact these technologies are retrofittable and can be installed in existing fleets of vehicles. Speeding is the #1 cause of harm on our roadways. The behavior that underpins this “unsafe driving choice” by motorist is very difficult to prevent using training, GPS or telematics. There is one proven safety technology that is 99.5% effective at preventing speeding and vehicle over speed its Intelligent Speed Assist that can not be switched off the by the driver like MAGTEC’s SafeSpeed. It’s also easily retrofittable into most vehicles. If you are a Vision Zero City or operate a private fleet message me or visit MAGTEC.com to find out how you can help prevent harm from speeding. #safetytraining #visionzero #roadtozero #safespeed
