Safe Operating Speed Alliance

Safe Operating Speed Alliance

Public Safety

Save lives and prevent injuries by eliminating speeding.

About us

Who we are? We are an alliance of organizations with a common goal to once and for all address the speeding epidemic. Over 10,000 people die each year in speed-related crashes and that number has relatively unchanged over the last few decades. The founding members of the alliance have diverse and complimentary expertise that enables deeper understanding of the systemic causes of speeding. We work with lawmakers, transportation associations, insurance carriers and individual transportation companies to promote policy, technological and behavioral solutions. Why Now? Because the problem is getting worse. Fatalities due to truck crashes increased 48% from 2009 to 2019. The latest highway fatality data from the National Safety Council comparing the fatality rate for the first six month of 2020 to the first six months of 2019 shows a 20% increase in fatalities with less vehicle miles traveled. Contrary to expectations, speed-related incidents have increased even more during the pandemic. The acceleration of e-commerce has resulted in more vehicles on roads, an increase in inexperienced drivers, and ever-shrinking delivery deadlines—the perfect recipe for an escalation in speeding. The current “solutions” are clearly not working. It’s time for a new and bolder approach. Advocacy Goals 1. Require Speed Limiter Be Used on Class 7 & 8 Trucks – encourage passage of the Cullum Owings Large Truck Safe Operating Speed Act 2. Promote adoption of smart speed limiter technology – encourage insurance companies to factor in usage during underwriting and recognition by FMCSA for beyond compliance 3. Promote investment to address infrastructure needs and support research/review of speed limits and methodology for setting or adjusting them 4. Encourage transportation companies to address organizational systems that encourage risky behavior and speeding, for example pay-by-the-mile, on-time incentives, and broader safety leadership and safety culture issues
