The August Newsletter is out:    We are excited to announce Jim Olson as the recipient of this year’s Lenin Fierro Vision Zero Fleet Advocacy Award. We will celebrate Jim’s 30+ years in road safety and environmental excellence, including the last 24 as the Vice President of Safety at Republic Services. Ian Reagan of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety / Highway Loss Data Institute has published a new article on his recent experience with intelligent speed assistance (ISA) — an insightful look at how this technology works in the real world. Commuting through Maryland, DC and Virginia roads with a SUV fitted with ISA, Reagan offers a frank and honest assessment, including the following: "I tried to shift my mindset. Instead of worrying about other drivers, I kept the SUV in the middle or right lane of the expressway. This month, TSR partners MassDOT and U.S. DOT Volpe National Transportation Systems Center published findings from an important new study of Direct Vision in state fleet vehicles. The study, commissioned on the request of the Massachusetts State Legislature, examines how prevalent Blind Zones are in state fleet vehicles in order to inform future fleet purchases and vehicle upgrades. The goal is to move toward improved Direct Vision in fleet vehicles, which allows for improved line-of-site view of Vulnerable Road Users (pedestrians, bicyclists, children and others) and contributes to decreased accidents and fatalities. Monday marked the start of The United Nations Global Campaign for Road Safety, an important new initiative launched by the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt in partnership with JCDecaux. It follows a recent UN resolution calling on Member States and others to scale up efforts to implement the Global Plan of Action for Road Safety, with the goal of a 50% reduction in road injuries and fatalities by 2030. At Together for Safer Roads (TSR), we are proud to support and complement such global efforts through our own work, including the Global Fleet Safety Instruments Standardization initiative. From comprehensive driver training programs to integrating advanced safety systems, we are actively working to improve the safety of fleets and reduce injuries among Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). By working closely with fleets and local governments in the US and around the world, we aim to reduce road incidents and save lives.
