Some of our staff after a super successful Safe Passages Reading event! Our CEO Josefina Alvarado Mena came to the Laurel Elementary school site along with members from our recruitment team, Master's in Social Work internship team, and Americorps team to read to the students! Everyone truly came together to give the kids a fun experience. Thank you to those who work at our school sites daily and those who work behind the scenes to make sure that we can provide services year around! Thank you to the CDC members who also came to speak with us about what we do and see some of our programs in action!
Our Baby Learning Program hosted at Esperanza Elementary is organized by the amazing Veronica Vega in Spanish and our collaborative partner, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, provides the playgroup facilitator.! While this is a development program to strengthen familial bonds, we also work with the families to provide whatever else they might need. Whether that be food, diapers, mental health service, or housing service support; we are here for our families!
Cesar Chavez was an American Mexican civil rights leader, most well-known for founding the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) alongside Doris Huerta in 1962. Chavez came from a lineage of farmers. When his parents lost their farm during the Great Depression, his family moved to California to continue farm-work. Chavez dealt with first-hand discrimination in the farming industry in the United States and began to advocate for the rights of migrant workers. Chavez employed non-violent resistance to boycott and protest the working conditions of migrant farm workers. Most notable was the Delano Grape Strike and Boycott of 1965. Over 800 farm workers struck ten grape vineyards to demand higher wages. Chavez led the first successful farmworkers union in American history. The union created industry-wide medical coverage, pension benefits, humane living conditions, and more. Cesar Chavez's work transcends farm workers' rights as his teaching and humble leadership inspired thousands to fight for social justice causes across the country. His famous slogan, "Si se Puede!" lives through those who continuously fight for others against all odds to improve humanity. Today we commemorate his legacy and continue the fight for equal rights among all people.
In honor of Women’s History Month, we would like to remind you of one of the most influential women in the Chicano civil rights movement.
