  • NC Foresters Under 40 held their first student and early career professionals meetup at North Carolina State University Schenck Forest! This event was funded by the SAF Foresters Fund Engagement Grant! Alex Thompson kicked us off with a discussion on The Value of Internships, next was First Year Job Expectations with Robby Evans, Forks in the Road by Blair Owen, and How to Communicate with Sara Cerv. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the event. The students liked hearing from young professionals and being able to network with them, and the young professionals in attendance enjoyed giving advice to the students. The mid-career professionals who attended thought the event was very valuable to both parties. @forestersunder40 @americanforesters #Forestry #networking #speakers #connection #saf #development

Technical Development & Planning Branch Head at North Carolina Forest Service

I’m looking for a forester who will serve as our agency subject matter specialist on forest product markets and the utilization of forest products throughout the state. This involves keeping a database of primary forest product mills and timber buyers, surveying a sample of the mills each year in collaboration with the USFS TPO program, being a technical resource for NCFS personnel and partners statewide, and supporting and promoting the forest products sector in NC. To succeed at this, you will develop relationships within the forest products industry and collaborate with numerous external partners and organizations. If this interests you, I encourage you to apply. The position closes 11/1/2024 5:00 PM Eastern, unless extended. The duty station will be either Raleigh or Clayton, NC. If you would like to learn more about the position or discuss anything about this opportunity, reach out to me at barry.new@ncagr.gov

For today’s #ThrowbackThursday Post, we’re taking you way back to the O.G. Tarheels. The production of tar, resin, and turpentine began around 1720 and was a booming industry in North Carolina until the reconstruction era. It was so influential that one individual observed “Nearly the whole trade of the town, Wilmington, is derived from the produce of the pine forest. The Wharves display immense qualities of pitch and resin barrels, and stills for the manufacturing of turpentine are numerous.” These materials were indispensable to waterproofing hulls and to keep sails and ropes from decaying. The photo for today’s post depicts two turpentine mills on North Carolina’s South River in 1890. Information from today’s post was sourced from the Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington and the North Carolina State Archives. This year’s conference will be held at the Hotel Ballast in Downtown Wilmington. Members can register for the conference by visiting the link in our bio. #forestproud #saf #apsaf #vasaf #ncsaf #scsaf #forestry

  • Dear APSAF Members, I am sure you all have heard about or experienced some of the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in our region, especially in Western North Carolina and Southwestern Virginia. Its been a few days since this historic event took place and many of us are still without power and access to resources. If you have seen the news, you know that many parts of Western North Carolina and Southwestern Virginia are devastated and have been severely affected by the rain and wind this storm brought with it. The APSAF Board of Directors would like to express our deepest sympathies to all who are impacted by this disaster. Many volunteers have risen to the occasion and are volunteering their time and services to restore access to services and homes. Thank you to all APSAF members who are actively involved in helping neighbors and strangers to get through these trying times. Resources are still scarce in many parts of our region. Many local and regional organizations and businesses are taking donations to provide food, water, and other resources to the affected areas. Please consider donating to them to help our members, friends, and the people affected by this disaster. The Carolina Loggers Association has created a fund-raising campaign to help the people affected by the storm and support the loggers who are moving to Western North Carolina to help with the efforts in the mountains. You can support their efforts with donations via check or Venmo. Checks should be made out to: Carolina Loggers Foundation PO Box 785 Henderson, NC 27536 Credit Card Payments Can Be Made Via Venmo To: @carolina-loggers-foundation The United Way of Southwest Virginia has created the 2024 SWVA Regional Disaster Relief Fund and donations can be made to support relief efforts in Southwestern Virginia. To donate follow this link: https://lnkd.in/ePCMbcjh You are all in our thoughts. As foresters, we are used to being resilient, and I know that together we will get through this. Patrick Hiesl (Chair) and the APSAF Board of Directors Appalachian Society of American Foresters @appalachian_saf @americanforesters
