SailTimer has developed software that scans our database of crowdsourced wind measurements from ships offshore, and compares the accuracy of forecasts in the same place and time. For wind direction in satellite weather forecasts, a mean error of 38 degrees is typical. SailTimer developed the first-ever sailboat wind sensor that could transmit to smartphones starting in 2011. If it had a measurement error of 38 degrees, that would not be acceptable. But this is the error level that ships have to navigate with today. Crowdsourced data from vessels up ahead can give ships better weather routing, to help reduce fuel costs and emissions. More about this on our updated website at https://lnkd.in/giz_C6XY
