Harnessing the power of the ocean to heal the climate.

About us

The ocean is an immensely powerful force of nature, and our greatest ally to reverse the tides on climate change. By studying the planet’s natural cycles, Captura designed a solution that removes CO2 from the ocean and harnesses its ability to heal the climate—a process known as Direct Ocean Capture. Developed and proven in Caltech’s laboratories, our unique Direct Ocean Capture technology runs with just two ingredients: seawater and renewable electricity. It extracts CO2 directly from seawater to be permanently stored or reused. This amplifies the natural equilibrium between the ocean and atmosphere, drawing carbon out of the air and into the ocean to rebalance. Captura’s approach requires no rare-Earth minerals, adds nothing to the ocean, and leaves no chemicals behind. It’s a low-cost, large-scale carbon removal solution that is environmentally sound.

🌊 Aloha from Hawaii! This week, the Captura team is thrilled to be visiting our partner NELHA at the stunning HOST Park in Kailua-Kona — the site where our 1,000-ton-per-year pilot project will be installed next month. We’re especially excited to join NELHA's 50th Anniversary Celebration this Saturday, October 19th, at their Open House event. We're looking forward to meeting and celebrating with the local community and the incredible innovators who make up HOST Park’s thriving ocean science ecosystem. For five decades, NELHA (Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority) has been fostering green economic growth in Kona. At HOST Park, groundbreaking work in renewable energy, aquaculture, and ocean-based technologies takes place, generating almost $150 million annually for Hawaii’s economy and creating over 600 jobs statewide. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with everyone and sharing more about how Captura’s work aligns with NELHA's mission of advancing sustainable innovation as an engine for economic development in Hawaii. See you at the event! https://lnkd.in/ge3AXSdG #NELHA50 #HOSTPark #DirectOceanCapture #OceanScience #Sustainability #GreenEconomy

We were delighted to host the team from our investor, National Grid, at our HQ recently - Stephen Smith, President, Brett Chandler, VP, Head of Business Development, and Gerard Kelly, VP of Innovation & Venture Acceleration. Their visit reflects the shared vision we have for advancing feasible, scalable climate solutions. At Captura, we are commercializing #DirectOceanCapture technology – a carbon removal solution that needs no absorbents, produces no waste, works with intermittent renewable energy, and can be deployed wherever there is access to the ocean. With the support of our partners and investors like National Grid, we are rapidly progressing through our technology piloting program, bringing us closer to deploying large-scale commercial facilities in multiple regions around the globe. The North Sea, for example, is a high-potential location where our technology could make a significant impact on decarbonization efforts. Thank you to National Grid, and all our partners, for your continued support. #CarbonRemoval #Partnerships #NetZero

Strategy, innovation, corporate venture capital, customer insight, regulation and competition policy. Opinions stated here are my own, not National Grid’s.

I enjoyed this story by Rachel Millard about the UK government's pledging just shy of £22bn for the nation's first carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. This technology will be critical in helping hard-to-decarbonize industries achieve net zero.   I hope this announcement signals openness to an even broader portfolio approach that includes carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies. According to the IPCC, stabilizing earth’s climate also requires removing CO2 that's accumulated in the air and oceans from decades of emissions. CDR is needed both to compensate for residual emissions and to achieve net-negative emissions after 2050.   Our portfolio company Captura is piloting direct ocean capture (DOC) technology, a form of CDR. Think of DOC as direct air capture’s (DAC) younger but cooler sibling: It's less mature but has promise to remove CO2 at lower cost. At scale, Captura’s system potentially will be able to capture millions of tons of CO2 per year and sit either along the coast or out at sea, close to offshore sequestration sites. This will avoid the cost and complexity of capturing emissions at source and of onshore transportation. Captura’s technology is also very flexible and can run when renewable generation is available, helping reduce congestion costs on grids. No wonder the company's a finalist for the XPRIZE. I visited Captura's California HQ recently, and I hope the UK government is thinking about the role the startup's technology could play in carbon removal. After all, two of the companies involved in developing the first carbon storage sites the new program will support -- Eni and Equinor -- also are investors in Captura. https://lnkd.in/erTEqnbd

Captura’s RD&D program is expanding in Los Angeles and Hawaii! With new projects and expanded programs, this work is bringing us closer to deploying #DirectOceanCapture at large, commercial scale. In Hawaii, we’re building our third pilot system in partnership with Equinor. With a capacity to capture 1000 tons of CO2 annually, the pilot will be installed at the Hawai‘i Ocean Science and Technology Park – a leading ocean research facility run by NELHA. And at the site of our 100-ton-per-year pilot facility at AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, our team is testing new technology breakthroughs and expanding our ocean health and MRV program. To learn more about Captura’s RD&D program and our work in L.A. and Hawaii, check out our blog post here: https://lnkd.in/gaYKc_ii   #innovation #carbonremoval #oceanhealth Image credit: Tetrachrome

When the team heard "Painting and Pinot," we all thought, "How hard could it be?" Fast forward to a few masterpieces (and a few creative interpretations), and we’re happy to report that no wine was wasted—though some canvases might never recover. 😅 Here’s to team building that looks like art class, tastes like a vineyard, and feels like a yoga session. 🎨 #TeamBuilding #MasterpiecesInTheMaking

"What attracted me to Captura is we have no absorbents, no by-products, we use only renewable energy and ocean water... when we think about a gigaton-scale industry, not having any waste or input material really lends itself to widescale adoption." Thank you to Susan Su and the Climate on the Edge podcast for featuring Captura's CEO, Steve Oldham. In this episode, Steve discusses our innovative #DirectOceanCapture solution and how what was once considered Plan B is now Plan A, highlighting the urgent need to scale up a range of climate solutions. 🌎 🌊 Listen below! ⬇ #CarbonRemoval #ClimatePodcasts #CDR #XPRIZE

Last week, Captura’s CEO, Steve Oldham, and Maya Kashapov, Business Development, had the privilege of attending the Carbon Removal Capital Summit in San Francisco, organized by Santander and XPRIZE. As one of the Top 20 Finalists in the XPRIZE Carbon Removal Competition, Captura is honored to be part of a global cohort dedicated to advancing solutions for large-scale carbon removal.   This summit provided a valuable platform for fostering meaningful connections between leading carbon removal innovators and investors. These partnerships are critical in driving the industry toward the scale necessary to meet global climate goals.   We sincerely thank the XPRIZE Carbon Removal team — Nikki Batchelor, Roopa Dandamudi, Kelsey Miller, and Michael Leitch — for creating an environment that fosters collaboration and innovation.   #XPRIZE #CDR #DirectOceanCapture
