Today I had the honor of joining Hiroshi Sakata, President of Sakata Seed Corporation, and His Excellency Shigeo Yamada, Japan’s Ambassador to the US, for a gracious lunch at the Ambassador’s residence in Washington DC. The Japan-US alliance is ever more important in this chaotic world, and Japan and the US serve as a model for alignment of agricultural policies, in particular, in precision plant breeding technology, like gene-editing. Such technologies will be vital to feeding a growing population. Sakata Seed America, Inc.

In May 2024, the International Working Group on Peronospora (IWGP) denominated a new race of Downy Mildew (Pfs) on spinach. The Downy Mildew isolate RZ2331B has been named Pfs race 20. Race 20 has been found in the USA and Europe and meets the criteria for race naming by the IWGP. After conducting rigorous Downy Mildew testing, we have confirmed that Affluence, Income, Reward, and Prosper spinach varieties are resistant to Downy Mildew race 20. Downy Mildew is a significant threat to the spinach industry, causing product loss, decreasing yields, and rejected produce. Therefore, Sakata is prioritizing breeding spinach for Downy Mildew resistance to benefit the global spinach industry. We are pleased to continue supplying premium baby leaf spinach varieties that meet the industry's needs. To see our full spinach portfolio, please check out all our spinach varieties on our website. #VeggiesBySakata #SakataSpinach #Sakata

New Horizon series of Sakata seedless watermelons are getting more popular in the market. Sakata's latest Horizon series commercial introduction "MIRAMONTE" is performing great. Miramonte has extremely attractive darker crimson sweet rinded mostly 45 count fruit size with high yield potentail, strong leaf coverage, and outstanding internal quality.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 Sakata is proud to make the Earth a priority, not just today, but every day. We do this by committing daily to seven of the Sustainable Development Goals called upon by the United Nations in order to bring peace and prosperity to the people and the planet. The National #EarthDay theme of 2024 is #PlanetVsPlastics. With that being said, Sakata is proud to support this theme through ongoing efforts. Check out what we've been up to both in the fight against plastic, as well as in support of our SDGs:⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 🌱 Reduce and reuse! - We are working to reduce our plastic waste at company events by introducing reusable drinking cups. 🌱 Recycle! - We are also making our events more sustainable by opting for disposable materials that can be recycled or composted - like bamboo tableware! 🌱 Recycle RIGHT! - We work with our local waste management companies to ensure we sort responsibly and to identify areas for improvement in our waste streams.
