Thanks to the extraordinary conservation efforts of Mass General Brigham clinicians and staff, we will resume our full procedural schedule starting today, Friday, October 18, without any case deferrals. We will continue to monitor IV fluid usage and supply closely, with conservation measures remaining in place to ensure safe patient care. We appreciate your ongoing support and will keep you updated on any further developments.

Due to a nationwide IV fluid shortage caused by Hurricane Helene, Mass General Brigham regrettably must defer additional scheduled procedures. While we’ve received additional shipments, our current supply is still limited and our projected deliveries of fluids are still insufficient to meet the full demands for care across our system. Thanks to the extraordinary conservation and response efforts of our clinicians and staff, we remain confident in our ability to safely care for all patients who require our immediate care. We will continue to keep you updated as our response continues.

In 1914, the Great Salem Fire devastated our 76-bed hospital on Charter Street. Thanks to the swift action of staff and the community, all 75 patients were safely evacuated. By 1917, a new chapter began as Salem Hospital reopened with 135 beds on 25 acres of the former Ware Estate on Highland Avenue. Our community’s resilience continues to inspire us today. #SalemHospital150

In 1938, the Salem Hospital Aid Association was formed with a mission to support the hospital and its patients. In its first year, 60 women took on active roles, volunteering their time and efforts to make a difference in our community. Their commitment marked the beginning of a long tradition of volunteer service that continues to shape our hospital today. #SalemHospital150

As healthcare providers across the country continue to confront the national IV fluid shortage following the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, Mass General Brigham has made the difficult decision to defer some non-emergent, elective procedures requiring certain IV fluids from Sunday, October 13, through at least Wednesday, October 16. While we strive to minimize any impact on patients, these measures will ensure we are able to care for those in immediate need. Due to the unpredictable nature of this situation, we do not know when our supply of IV fluids will improve but we are closely monitoring and will continuously evaluate to ensure we can return to normal operations as soon as possible. We are contacting affected patients and will work to reschedule them as soon as we are able.

After nearly losing a finger in 2019, Matthew Swartz, a Swampscott native and chef, received exceptional care at Salem Hospital. Over the past five years, Swartz and his sister, Debbie Shalom, have donated $50,000 through The Swartz Shalom Charitable Foundation including a recent $10,000 donation for a "smart fridge" in the Emergency Department.
