Taxability update for Pennsylvania: The tech industry is cutting-edge- always innovating, discovering new methods, and expanding the horizons of our possibilities. State and local tax can often be the opposite- legislation moving at a snail's pace and complicated rules making processes more challenging. But what do they have in common? There are always changes. Take a look at this case which brings tech and tax together: Pennsylvania recently ruled that two important tech transactions are taxable in the state: Cloud Computing and Support Services for Canned Computer Software. This is a big change, one you need to know about if you work in this industry or in Pennsylvania. #Software #Pennsylvania #Tax

How would you classify these products- Tangible Personal Property, Intangible Property, or Real Property? Understanding your product is key to making sure your company is compliant with sales tax. It’s a big problem when you have to go back and fix a misclassification- these problems just snowball. This also goes for professionals who utilize automation. Automation systems do a lot of the work for you, but if you haven’t set it up properly, your whole process could be filled with messy mistakes. Let’s play a little game- we'll give you an item, and you have to guess if its Tangible Personal Property, Intangible Property, or Real Property. Find the answers in the comments. 1. Desk 2. Office Building 3. Patents 4. Fence Maybe those were easy- but starting with the fundamentals can ensure you find compliance for your company. Let’s kick it up a notch: 5. Livestock 6. Mineral rights 7. Stock certificate 8. Carpet Something you need to keep in mind here: it all depends on the state! As sales tax is a state-based tax, each state can set up their definitions and classifications however they see. For this example, we’re using tax definitions in Illinois. Check the comments- how'd you do? Anything you’re surprised by? Find out why here: https://lnkd.in/gn_is9_q #AccountingTips #Accountants #Finance

Jumpstart starts tomorrow, but it is not too late! Learning on the job is great... to a point. When you’re relying on anecdotal instructions, flimsy resources, and processes that haven’t been updated in years, you could be missing major areas of compliance. Every month, our team picks one of our company values to focus on- and we share where we’ve seen it demonstrated. As a team, we selected our value of Integrity, doing the right thing no matter what. At our staff meeting last Friday, our team pointed out where we saw each other demonstrate these values. This is a valuable exercise that encourages us to adopt these values and notice them every day. Here’s what we came up with! Jennifer Adams celebrated Diane Yetter’s authenticity and commitment to presenting information not only correctly, but also genuinely. Sam Hughes acknowledged the team’s integrity as shown in our internal processes- maintaining transparency not just for our clients, but for our team as well. Sean commended the consultants’ focus as a sign of integrity- maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency when working with our clients.   Tatisa (Tasha) Joiner thanked the management team in particular for their high professional standards, recognizing how when management creates a professional environment, these values can spread across the entire team. Amanda Cusack recognized how our team interacts with each other. In upholding respect for our co-workers and a common vision for the future of our company, we avoid workplace drama. Diane showed appreciation for the team’s willingness to take responsibility and accountability. We believe in asking for help early on and owning up to our work.  Finally, Trisha Davidson, CMI insisted upon integrity across our company’s Fantasy Football league, particularly among our dutiful commissioner Emma Younger, encouraging fair plays and not too many fouls. Think about times when you’ve seen co-workers demonstrating your company values- what do you say to them? How do you demonstrate your values? #CompanyValues #Culture #SalesTaxNerd
