¡Aquí están las 100 startups para ver en Colombia 2024! 🚀🚀 https://lnkd.in/eEPTPBgd
Samay is on a quest to stop the progression of and ultimately prevent respiratory diseases by empowering patients, caregivers/families and clinicians with high quality and actionable health information at home. Backed by NSF and NIH, we have developed a patented “acoustic resonance” technology that can detect air trapping, an earlier and more sensitive marker of lung dysfunction. This technology has the potential to accurately diagnose and predict deterioration (exacerbations) 4+ days in advance using low-cost, over-the -counter, sensors (100x cheaper).

Holy smokes, Hispanic women are kicking ass in #MedTech lately. Just in the last month: Fellow Colombian Maria Artunduaga, MD, MPH, MTM of Samay (respiratory health), won MedTech Innovator; another fellow Colombian Valentina Agudelo Vargas of Salva Health (breast cancer diagnostics) won the Startup Battlefield 200 at #TechCrunchDisrupt2024; and Carolina Aguilar of INBRAIN Neuroelectronics (brain-machine interfaces) raised a massive $50M Series B. As a Colombian-American with four daughters, I love to see the role models arising from this trend.

BioGratitude Recently, I had a photo session that turned into something more. It wasn’t planned, but during the session, we ended up filming a short video. When I received the final cut, it struck a chord and inspired me to write this post. In the past few weeks, I've noticed something wonderful. Spontaneously, across many of our activities—whether with fellow entrepreneurs, investors, or key ecosystem players—there's been a recurring sentiment: gratitude for working together. This gratitude often follows a shared piece of advice, an introduction, or a strategic discussion. But truly, we should be the ones saying thank you. Our space is still niche, but new players are stepping in. Organizations like GRIDX, The Ganesha Lab, SF500, CITES, SP Ventures, Pitanga, Atento Capital, Endurance28, and 1200vc are all making their mark. Behind them, there are family offices, large corporations, and institutional investors putting resources into Latin American biotech. Startups like Samay, a Colombian-founded company that recently won first place in the Medtech Innovator Global Competition, and BIOMAKERS, recognized as Argentina's most innovative company, are proof of the progress we are making. Similarly, the biotech scene in Uruguay is thriving, with upcoming international events set to shine even more light on this region. Thank you Emiliano Trias, Ph.D. and Josefina Correa for the efforts and commitments you are pouring into the biotech industry in that wonderful country. The video wasn’t planned, and honestly, I'm a bit shy about sharing it—but it turned out really well! During the recording, I was asked about my values, quite unexpectedly. My candid response reflects what we feel in this industry—our conviction, our shared dreams, and the opportunity we have to create real change. It speaks to how much we rely on each other. Interdependence is key. By standing together, we push boundaries, overcome obstacles, and redefine what’s possible. Together, we can achieve far more than we ever could alone. Thank you for helping build a stronger industry—together. #BioGratitude #LatinAmericaBiotech #EcosystemBuilding #ZentynelVC #ScienceAndBusiness

Still riding the wave of our global win at MedTech Innovator! 🥂 HLTH Inc. Day 2 was full of unexpected visits from old friends, including startup CEOs 🦸♀️ Swarna Balasubramaniam, MD (surgeon turned MedTech CEO, she's working on resolving postop ileus), Juan C Jimenez (he just got a Breakthrough from FDA!), Anuj Khandelwal (who's successfully completed a study catching 2x more diabetic ulcers from home), Konrad Morzkowski (commercializing the smallest EKG patch), Alex Arevalos PhD (4x founder now building AI nurses for IBD), David Narrow (new acquaintance who had a lot of good ideas about my GTM strategy), investors Isabelle Chae (we had a long session on specific milestones she'd like to see and introduced me to Arooshi Kumar, MD, a fellow physician who invests with other MIT alumni), Megan Dover, P.Eng., MBA (first time meeting IRL, thanks Neil Ray for the intro, I also want a Gates grant!), Brad Niles (CEO of ARIZ Precision Medicine), Eli Velasquez (leading Investors of Color), ecosystem builders Paul Grand (no intro needed, everyone knows him!) and Tiffany Wilson (leading University City Science Center in Philly, she's beating all milestones in record time), pulmonologist turned techie Matthew Crowe, DO, MBA (thanks Nisha Mehta, MD for putting together the Physician Side Gigs WhatsApp chat), Singaporean respiratory rock-star Adrian Ang (he just raised a gigantic seed to commercialize in the US the smallest digital stethoscope) and powerhouse Ruby Gadelrab Tudor, a trailblazer in the digital space and long time supporter of women founders, she just secured $1M from Lisa Suennen, GCB.D (American Heart Association) my most favorite instructor at University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business. Last but not least, kudos to Pamela Nogués for leading the business development of her Uruguayan-based nearshore software development firm, I have to say Latam is full of talented engineers, just take Samay as an example. Looking forward to catching up with more fellow entrepreneurs and investors, please come by the NIH SEED pavilion, kiosk 14, we still have goodies from Colombia🇨🇴

Wheels up! Congratulations #Toronto and Ray Briscuso, Scott Whitaker, Peter J Arduini for a great AdvaMed conference. Brian Johnson, MassMEDIC and Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, the gauntlet is thrown - they set new record we need to beat in 2026! Highlights: - Got verklepmt hearing story of Maria Artunduaga, MD, MPH, MTM, of #Colombia who 8 years ago declared she'd be on MedTech Innovator stage. Not only did Samay (the first #LatinAmerican company in the contest) make the stage, the company she started that year to help people like her abuela with OPD won! 1st among about 1000 competitors. #LatinaMedtech - Was energized by the talent and technology of 'Material Girls' panel I subbed onto for Nora Nseir of Nurami Medical . 2 of the 5 MTI finalists were on our panel - to me, this reflects how the products which touch tissue/biology and stay in the body will always be the core of medical devices,, even if connected. For instance, for BCI advancing materials will pace the size, deliverability, power, safety, and effectivess as a long term implant - Loved the dialogue when Dr. Adnan Siddiqui, MD, PhD and Dr. DRE (Robert Cohen) met for first time on a panel. Two entrepreneurial and practical visionaries on fusing technology with real patient/MD needs. Jacobs Neurological Institute, Stryker (Tip of the hat to Adnan for hiring Carlos Pena ex FDA to accelerate safe and approvable innovation) - hearing from Kwame Ulmer how much MedTech Color breakfast has grown since that first one years ago. - Encouraging and informative panels - Notably Strategics on M&A and the State of MedTech. - Accessibility of leaders including from FDA - Michelle Tarver, MD, PhD, Owen Faris, Jeff Shuren Material Girls Panel: Nicolette Driscoll, NeuroBionics; Upma Sharma, PhD, Arsenal Medical; Kristine Mechem Craif Inc.; Stephanie Juniat, Cyted Health; Nicole Black, PhD , Paul Grand, Santosh Iyer, John Babitt, Ambar Boodhoo, Kenn Turner, Sonal Patel; Joseph (Joe) Smith, MD, PhD, Mirren Mandalia, MD MBA, Raina Dauria
