Zoo Miami Joins Efforts with San Antonio Zoo for Texas Horned Lizards Reproduction and Release In a heartwarming testament to conservation success, San Antonio Zoo proudly announces the hatching of 71 Texas horned lizards, with seven more eggs incubating. Adding to this excitement, San Antonio Zoo's new collaborative satellite colony at Zoo Miami has celebrated its first successful breeding season with eight new hatchlings and half a dozen more lizards eagerly anticipated. This milestone is part of a visionary collaboration that began in 2020 when San Antonio Zoo partnered with Zoo Miami to create a satellite colony. This innovative approach ensures a bright future for the Texas horned lizard by mitigating risks and increasing egg production. Following San Antonio Zoo's proven protocols, the Zoo Miami team nurtures this charismatic species, with hatchlings set to journey to San Antonio Zoo and eventually be released into the wild at restored sites in Texas. Affectionately known as the horny toad, the Texas horned lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) once flourished across most of the state but has faced significant declines due to habitat loss and invasive species. In response, San Antonio Zoo launched the Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project in 2017. Since then, the tireless efforts of the Center for Conservation & Research at San Antonio Zoo (CCR) have led to the release of 208 Texas horned lizards into the wild. Leveraging Geographic Information System data, genetic research, and horned lizard ecology, the team works to populate suitable habitats with robust, zoo-hatched individuals. The partnership with Chiron K9's Texas Horned Lizard Detection Canine Network is key to this success, whose specially trained dogs help ensure effective tracking and monitoring post-release. Recent site visits revealed successful breeding and expansion, with multiple sightings of lizards from previous releases and their offspring. The Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project thrives through the generous support of donations and grants. Continued collaboration between San Antonio Zoo, Zoo Miami, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and other Texas Horned Lizard Conservation Coalition members ensures the ongoing success of these conservation efforts.
