For more about our law enforcement services on tribal lands: https://lnkd.in/gVyZjV9D
In 1953, Public Law 280 transferred the responsibility of providing daily law enforcement services in Indian Country from the Federal Government, to state and local agencies. In the following decades since, interpreting and applying PL280 to the daily life of tribes and law enforcement resulted in some confusion and frustration for involved entities. As part of our ongoing partnerships with tribes throughout San Diego County, the San Diego Sheriff's Office brought together tribal, legal, judicial, and other experts to help demystify PL280 for those who provide safety services on tribal lands. Nearly 60 students from state, federal, local, and tribal organizations were in attendance. I was honored to be the next in a long line of SDSO presenters to host the training. I would especially like to thank the Rincon Tribe for graciously hosting us in their new Government Center. It was a beautiful venue which provided the perfect environment for the training.
