  • Sandia is turning 75 🎉      In the summer of 1945, the Albuquerque Army Air Field, formerly a training facility for bomber pilots and aircraft mechanics, was named the site for Los Alamos National Laboratory's new Z Division.      President Harry Truman marked the official beginning of Sandia National Labs in an iconic letter in 1949, encouraging Sandia to become its own entity and render “exceptional service in the national interest.” This charge became Sandia’s motto and remains so to this day.       We’ll be sharing highlights from Sandia’s history now through its 75th anniversary on November 1.       #Sandias75th #Sandia #history #STEM

  • Meet Mykonos ⚡ Sandia’s Mykonos Facility is a pulsed power driver operating in support of the Z Machine. Its high shot rate allows for rapid innovation and prototyping of novel ideas. “Pulsed power is essentially getting as much energy into small volume as possible, as quickly as possible,” said Sandia electrical engineer Derek Lamppa. “With Mykonos we can study five, ten shots a week versus five, ten shots a year that you could get for similar experiments on Z.” Watch the full video to learn more about the Mykonos Facility: https://bit.ly/4dXki6G

  • New tech on deck ☀️ Sandia scientists successfully tested a new falling-particle receiver at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility, marking a major milestone toward launching the Labs’ newest concentrating solar thermal power plant. “Ultimately, we hope that this tower will demonstrate that particle-based CSP plants like this one can be a critical technology in helping the country achieve a fully decarbonized energy grid,” said engineer Brantley Mills. • Meet Samantha Jaszewski, a trailblazing Hruby Fellow at Sandia 🔬 Samantha is working to revolutionize computer memory and uncovering how certain materials can withstand tough conditions, like radiation exposure. Her work is crucial for protecting our nation's security. This research is possible through fellowship opportunities, like the Hruby and Truman Fellowships, at Sandia. • Highlighting Sandia’s dedication to work-life balance this Labor Day 🏠 A career at Sandia means delivering exceptional service in the national interest, access to state-of-the-art facilities and, new this year, two additional floating holidays for employees to use on what’s important to them. “I don’t normally take time off during spring break, but this year I enjoyed a one-day staycation with my family,” said Sandia analyst Natasha Hart. “I’m Vietnamese and even though this year’s Lunar New Year started on a Saturday, I was able to extend my celebration by using one of my floating holidays,” said Sandia recruiter Doan Phung. “I used a few of my floating holiday hours to leave work early on Valentine’s Day and tack on some additional time to my vacation,” said Sandia manager Lorenzo Stanton. • Finding faster answers to complex problems 🔎 As a kid, Sandia’s Rémi Dingreville loved to go fast. He biked fast, skied fast and ran fast. Now, as a scientist, he uses machine learning to speed through his research. Rémi co-developed a way to make virtually any kind of computer simulation faster, propelling scientists to quicker insights about the effects of drugs on cells or the potential of rocket engines to send humankind to Mars and beyond. • From struggling student to renowned leader in applied mathematics 👏 Congratulations to Sandia’s Richard Lehoucq for being inducted as a fellow into the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). In his 27 years at Sandia, Richard has published more than 75 papers, co-authored a book and presented at international conferences. “I love being able to express complex mathematical ideas in a simple, clean and neat way,” Richard said. “I wasn’t a good K-12 student and don’t do well on standardized tests, but I have resilience and I’m flattered that colleagues half my age are willing to collaborate with me.” Read more about Richard’s accomplishments: https://bit.ly/4duHBVD
