We are thrilled to announce the groundbreaking of The Grove Childcare Center, a visionary project that embodies our commitment to community and workforce well-being. For those unfamiliar with Schaffer Manufacturing, we are a mission-driven, people-centric organization. Our mission is to continually expand our positive impact on the well-being of every individual we touch, embracing the principles of “conscious capitalism.” Our internal team is one of our most important stakeholder groups, along with the communities of Polk County. Facing a projected decline in the local workforce through 2032, we needed a unique employee benefit to attract and retain top talent. Our solution was to build an onsite childcare center offering guaranteed slots at discounted rates for our team members. As we explored the childcare situation in Wisconsin, we discovered alarming issues. Polk County is a childcare desert, with demand far exceeding available slots. Waitlists extend over a year, forcing parents to stay home and forgo a second income, reducing their quality of life and the local workforce. Additionally, childcare workers earn an average of $14.60 per hour, often without benefits, leading to burnout and high turnover rates, which further reduce the quality and availability of care. Recognizing these challenges, we envisioned a center that could better serve all stakeholders. Thus, The Grove Childcare Center’s mission became "to improve the accessibility and quality of childcare in Polk County." Leveraging our relationship with Schaffer Manufacturing, The Grove will offer comprehensive compensation packages, including retirement and health benefits, alongside industry-leading wages. The center will provide up to 100 slots, significantly increasing the availability of childcare in Polk County. However, knowing manufacturing and knowing childcare are two different things. We needed substantial help to launch this business. Anne and I have always lived with an abundance mindset, believing that pure intentions and a genuine desire to help would attract the right people. And they did. The community has rallied behind us, providing technical support, business plan projections, grants, a builder with aligned values, and enthusiastic support from our Schaffer Manufacturing team members. Construction will begin in a few weeks, and we aim to have the ribbon cutting by the end of January. While we don't have a waitlist yet, we anticipate the center will fill up as quickly as we can staff it.
