In this moment of unprecedented global competitiveness, the strength of the U.S. science & technology enterprise will dictate our place on the world stage. That’s why we’re launching the Vision for American Science & Technology (VAST) Task Force, a cross-sector coalition of industry leaders working to develop impactful policy recommendations that will position the U.S. S&T enterprise to support America’s global leadership. Together, we’ll work to drive innovation, boost research and collaboration, and foster a prosperous future for our nation. #VAST Read more from Alison Snyder and Maria Curi in Axios ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eh2g7gmU

AI is one of the most important innovations of the generation, that’s why Congress must collaborate with the companies that are driving AI advances to inform regulation that addresses concerns surrounding AI without stifling U.S. innovation. Sens. Chuck Schumer, Martin Heinrich, Todd Young, and Mike Rounds have a bipartisan deal to focus on AI next month. Read more form Ursula Perano: https://lnkd.in/dtv2D2QA

Arati Prabhakar, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy recently noted that “American R&D does not thrive unless we have the federal component to lay this foundation of basic research, to educate students that are going to feed into all these industries.” The U.S. must increase its investments in research and development to remain globally competitive and support our economic development and national security. https://lnkd.in/eRgFW-Qw

In her 2024 State of the Science address, Science and Technology Action Committee member Marcia McNutt noted that while U.S. science is strong, we must take action to increase federal investments, remain competitive with China, and earn public trust. She expanded on her remarks in the Fall 2024 edition of Issues in Science and Technology and identified the core challenges the research community must address to maintain and strengthen American science. Last week marked the beginning of FY25, but we don’t yet have a federal budget. We appreciate the hard work happening on Capitol Hill to advance FY25 appropriations funding and hope our policymakers can finish the job. It’s essential that Congress complete action on FY25 appropriations to support funding for necessary science and technology research. Enactment of an FY25 continuing resolution beyond December 2024 will delay everything from cancer research at the The National Institutes of Health of Health to university partnerships at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Congratulations to Nobel Prize Winners Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun! This exciting moment is a reminder of the critical importance of federal funding for science research. “It represents the recognition of how wonderful and unexpected discoveries come from a curiosity in basic science financed by tax payer money. It’s a vitally important, probably the most important message, that this investment really pays off,” Ambros said. https://lnkd.in/eCfJSCka
