⚡ Last Week Dr. Hill presented a second paper during the 2024 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP) in Dresden, Germany ⚡ Scientific Lightning Solutions is excited to share our latest research, which leverages our state-of-the-art instrumentation. The study focuses on high-speed video observations of downward negative lightning strikes that terminated on tall structures at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with a special emphasis on the attachment process. Key highlights: • Close analysis of aborted, unconnected, and connecting upward positive leaders from tall structures. • Examination of upward leader characteristics based on structure height and geometry. • Precise measurements of striking distance, compared with common IEC formulations. Kicking off Day 3 of the 2024 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP) in Dresden. Dr. Dustin Hill delivered SLS’s original research related to nearby lightning interactions with launch vehicles. The presentation is titled "Direct Measurements of Lightning Induced Coupling to a Spacecraft Umbilical Cable” and is co-authored by Dr. Carlos Mata. SLS regularly works with NASA Launch Services to further the understanding and mitigate the effects of lightning on spacecraft systems, enhancing the safety and reliability of future space missions.
