Lighting up lives with programs as diverse as the people we serve.
About us
Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) is a community-based nonprofit centered on the belief that every person deserves meaningful support to achieve their aspirations – especially struggling families and individuals. With programs designed to enrich lives and strengthen communities through services and engagement for individuals at all ages, beginning with those most in need, SCS has been lighting up lives since 1974. SCS serves a diverse community of over 16,000 people of all ethnicities and income levels throughout Queens with programs that range from pre-K to college and career readiness, home care and home health aide training, Beacon and Cornerstone community centers for children and families, ESOL classes, immigration legal services, immigrant community engagement, a vibrant senior center, and a full range of services for at-risk older adults including social adult day care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, and a city-wide program of supportive services for those who care for them. SCS encourages individuals to use their time and talents to give back to their community. The organization offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals ages 15 and older including helping youth through tutoring and homework assistance, preparing or serving meals in the senior center, visiting homebound older adults, helping homebound seniors care for their pets, assisting with administrative work, and more.

Thanks to everyone who joined us last week for our 50th Anniversary Celebration. It was a wonderful evening with cocktails at our Long Island City location, and dinner and program at American Brass. Guests included local supporters, members of the SCS Board of Directors, program participants, and SCS staff. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards presented a proclamation honoring SCS for 50 years of service to the community. The program included remarks by Judy Zangwill, Executive Director for SCS; Lisa Deller, President of the SCS Board of Directors; Harry Otterman, owner of Norcor Management Corp; NYC Council Member Julie Won; and U.S. Representative Nydia Velázquez. Fifty years ago, SCS was founded as a small senior center. So, it was extra special to us that Lee Stookey, widow of Byron Stookey, one of SCS’ founding members, was in attendance with their daughter Sarah, to help us celebrate our golden anniversary. During the event, we announced a significant new initiative: an affordable housing community for older adults featuring 61 units to be located in Sunnyside, Queens. The land for the project was generously donated by Harry Otterman, who was honored at the event. An event like this is not possible without the support of our sponsors. Thanks to all of our sponsors, including Bank of America, TF Cornerstone, Plaxall, Inc., Triad Management, USI Insurance Services, Ned Steele, Amit Kalra, and David Levin.
