Last week, I had the opportunity to take part in two great speaking events: On Tuesday night I presented my talk "Everything I Know About Service Design, I Learned in a Restaurant" at the monthly meetup of SDN New York Chapter. In it, I leaned on 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry, drew connections between the world of foodservice and the world of service design, and discussed how the lessons learned in restaurants can directly inform the work we do as service designers. On Friday, I spoke about navigating change at Design Thinking Zeal, hosted by Andi Cuddington and Lee Kim, stressing that recognizing when change is coming (always?) and releasing yourself from being tied to the outcomes can help you remain focused on your journey. Thanks to both groups for the space to share my story; I'm looking forward to more opportunities.

Earlier this year, the SDN New York Chapter was struggling to fill our speaker lineup so I told David Russo to consider sharing his story. After all, Natalie Kuhn used to say "everyone has a talk in them". To be honest, my suggestion was partly selfish because I love food and am always curious about how food gets made and served. But I also knew that a) successful career pivots require contextualizing experiences so he already had the talk in him, and b) talking about food brings people together, especially in a city like New York. My hunch was right! He finally debuted his talk to a full house last night. Last night I attended SDN New York Chapter October gathering. David Russo did a masterful job of sharing his experience in the restraunt industry and how it relates to Service Design. It was also specially meaningful because he quoted a lot of Danny Meyer’s book “Setting the table” and we just had Danny Meyer speak at our event at Pfizer so it felt like I was listening to him again through a different lens. There are days when I believe I’m a 'normal' human. And then I go to NYC, where adventures happen, and that illusion evaporates. On Tuesday, we played, reflected, and told stories at the SDN New York Chapter LEGO Serious Play event. I had SO MUCH fun! So thankful: ∙that I could come. And meet everyone. And enjoy! ∙for a full circle moment — from being a speaker remotely in August 2021 to now being an in-person attendee in August 2024. ∙for the beautiful headband from our facilitator and artist Lee Kim.
