Sometimes, it's smart to be dense. 😎  The hard drive industry has pushed perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) to the absolute limit of 2.4TB per platter. This fundamental technological limitation means that the only way to increase a hard drive's maximum capacity is to add more platters to the device. But this approach comes at a cost: more components and more moving parts means higher power consumption and higher total cost of ownership (TCO) for customers. Seagate engineers saw this limitation as an opportunity, so they reimagined an entirely new technology called heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), which packs more data onto a single hard drive platter. This technology breakthrough increases a hard drive’s capacity without having to add more platters to the product design. Mozaic 3+, our unique implementation of HAMR, paves the way to achieve industry-leading areal densities that start at 3TB per platter, with a path to 5TB and beyond.
