#Conference alert. We're thrilled to announce that SCI's Chief Strategy Officer Dr. Rebecca Ford will be speaking at the 2024 APA Division 34: Society for Environmental, Population, and Conservation Psychology (SEPCP) Conference next week (9/26-27). This conference, which is being co-chaired by SCI Research Scientist (and soon to be Professor) Stylianos Syropoulos, will feature cutting-edge research on strategies to promote environmental behavior and discuss how psychological insights can drive positive change for a sustainable future. Becky's talk, “Home electrification for a resilient net-zero future” will be on September 27th at 6am PT/ 9am ET. In this presentation, she will share findings from a systematic review exploring trends, gaps, and opportunities for home electrification. Drawing on these findings, she will outline where psychological science is needed to enhance electrification efforts across knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation and confirmation stages. Becky will be speaking in Session 4 on Technology & Design alongside Daniel Sloot (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Nicole Sintov (Ohio State University), Elspeth Spence, (Cardiff University), and Kaitlin T. Raimi (University of Michigan). Registration for this two-day online conference is still open until September 19 and only costs $35 for students and $95 for Professionals (including postdocs) to attend. #resource alert. Storytelling has the power to spark climate action and Climate Outreach highlights how effective climate stories can do more than just inform and engage people to take action in their latest article. Moving beyond “toxic positivity,” the best narratives blend urgency with hope, showing real people making impactful changes. A few suggestions: 1️⃣ Stop talking about the climate story we should be telling and start actually telling it. 2️⃣ Do deep, long-term community outreach with people affected by the climate transition. 3️⃣ Develop a new narrative for us Climate Week types. How do we better tell the story of the progress that’s been made – a story that is often inspiring – even as we acknowledge how much further we have to go? #publication alert. We're thrilled to share "How to Rebuild Trust in Science", yet another installment in the Nautilus Magazine's Science at the Ballot Box series written by our awesome Science Advisor, Dr. Jylana L. Sheats in the Aspen Institute Nautilus Magazine. In this article, Jylana explores practical steps to rebuild that trust by promoting transparency, community engagement, and empathy in scientific communication. A few key points from the article: 1. Community Engagement and Trust-Building: Building trust in science requires involving local leaders, understanding community needs, and creating collaborative projects. Trust is strengthened when communities are meaningfully engaged and able to see the relevance of scientific work to their lives. 2. Culturally Relevant Communication: Effective science communication respects cultural differences and utilizes relatable formats, like text messages, music, and character-driven stories, to make health information accessible and engaging. 3. Strengthening Trust to Support Public Health: In times of crisis, trusted science communication can save lives by encouraging communities to follow critical public health advice. Efforts that build trust and address misinformation, like the Global Listening Project, aim to foster resilience for future health challenges. This article a compelling read for anyone involved in science, education, or policy! Check it out at: https://lnkd.in/gksaCKhk

#research alert. The upcoming U.S. presidential election is pivotal not just for American science but for global research and policy impact. According to a recent Nature survey, scientists overwhelmingly view climate change, science funding, and international collaboration as top election concerns, with many questioning if the U.S. will continue to be a scientific hub if priorities shift. Researchers, both in and outside the U.S., recognize this election’s potential to redefine where and how they work! Read the full article at: https://lnkd.in/dm-SGX87

#publication alert. We're so excited to share a new article in the Aspen Institute Science & Society Program and Nautilus Magazine written by our very own Science Advisor Jylana L. Sheats, PhD, MPH L. Sheats, "What AI Can Do For Your Country." In it, she explores the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on government operations, from disaster response to healthcare, while also shedding light on the challenges that lie ahead. She also emphasizes the need for ethical, equitable, and inclusive AI applications as these technologies are developed. We're also hard at work on a new study of the energy impacts of AI and the role of load flexibility in addressing them. As AI continues to revolutionize various sectors, it's important to take a scientific lens to both its potential and its unintended impacts. Thanks Jylana for giving us so much to think about... Have we piqued your curiousity? If yes ,check out the article at: https://lnkd.in/gvc-qcCt
