Reflecting on my experience at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference in Chicago. This was my first convention acting as an investor, representing no one but me. Here are my key takeaways: 1. The Inspiration: Industry professionals discussing the future of cannabis in a data-driven and purposeful manner was truly enlightening, especially considering the chaotic beginnings of the industry. If you remember it, your back hurts, you're probably due for a colonoscopy, and dont forget to take your omegas. 2. Customer Focus: Companies like Hoodie Analytics and Seed Talent are setting new standards by positioning heavily in personalized customer strategies, reminiscent of enterprise SaaS practices like Customer Success and strategic account management, which, refreshingly is a significant shift from the past. I geeked out with Kurt Kaufmann and the Hoodie team about it, because I thought I was alone. 3. Multi-Industry Players: The influx of investors from diverse verticals has brought valuable practices to the cannabis industry, raising performance expectations and driving success, reflecting a positive evolution from past "norms". I use norms in quotes because it is cannabis, and it aint and never was, and never will be except for its own norm. 4. The Community: Despite rapid growth, the cannabis industry remains relatively small, fostering a tight-knit community with a notable level of care and support among its members. "If one succeeds, we all succeed" may not economically be the case, the sentiment that fosters is still there. Not for nothing, but THIS GUY wants you to succeed. Also, people involved are widely respected giants. Seth Yakatan comes to mind. Years of investment banking, rounds and exits gives a vision that not a ton of cannabis investors have developed yet, so people look to him and others (that list is SMALL) for truth and guidance. I also learned a ton from the dudes over at Glass House Farms over some Italian diet cola and arancini. (Eataly is a zoo, but delicious as hell) 5. Tech: There is a MASSIVE disparity in cannabis tools, so the future of cannabis SaaS needs to aggregate data to be impactful. There is so much potential for significant growth in 2025, driven by innovations like elegantly packaged API kits. But add to it AI, data and and technologies such as Xylem's super smart robots for mass filling cones.... Dude? ROBOTS THAT ROLL J BONES. I asked Bill White if they had a home model. Because goddamn, what a time to be alive. While this my first cannabis convention, this is absolutely not my last. See you in Miami.
