This week we kicked off the 2024-25 school year with our first SFFILM Education event, a screening of THE WILD ROBOT with director Chris Sanders and producer Jeff Hermann. We had just over 400 Bay Area students and teachers in attendance. The film recently played at TIFF and has also been packing in industry/Academy screenings down in LA before its release on Sept. 27. I believe this was the first screening that Chris and Jeff have attended that was specifically for kids. They took advantage of the opportunity and hid in the back of the theater to see how some of the major story beats landed with the audience. They were delighted by the reaction from the crowd, especially when the audience spontaneously applauded during some of the most emotionally satisfying scenes. We’re pleased we got to kick off the year with such a special film. I have a sneaking feeling it will be a major contender when we hit awards season. Some feedback from our audience: -Thank you for the incredible opportunity to attend the advanced screening of THE WILD ROBOT. Our 4th-grade students were captivated by the film, which beautifully complemented our classroom discussions and left them inspired. This experience will have a lasting impact on how they engage with storytelling and creativity. I deeply appreciate SFFILM for making this unforgettable event possible! -What an amazing educational experience you put on for these children. Everyone from our group had a positive experience that led to creative educational extensions and additional learning opportunities. Thank you for including us. The children had rave reviews for the film. I personally cried during the film and enjoyed myself immensely. -My students were so excited to talk to Chris after the movie. They could not believe that they had access to talk to the director and producer. I cannot thank SFFILM Education enough for all the opportunities they have provided for my Animation Pathway. Having students actually talk to the "creators" helps support the thing we do in class. -I cried, but it was a good cry and I was never scared! - student quote. Photos by Reed Norberto Borja #SFFILM
