Shake Shack sprouted from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park (NYC) to support the Madison Square Park Conservancy’s first art installation. The cart was quite the success, with Shack fans lined up daily for three summers. In 2004, a permanent kiosk opened in the park: Shake Shack was born. This modern day “roadside” burger stand serves up the most delicious burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard, shakes, beer, wine and more. An instant neighborhood fixture, we welcomed people from all over the city, country and world who gathered together to enjoy fresh, simple, high-quality versions of the classics. The rest, as they say, is burger history. And since day one, it would not have been possible without our stellar team! Happy Climate Week! 🌎 At this year’s events, we’re both sharing about our sustainability efforts and listening to ways we can take them further. Earlier this week, our Sustainability Specialist Corey Blumenthal joined the stage with various thought leaders in the food space, moderated by Danielle Nierenberg (President of Food Tank), for a panel presented by Food Tank and The James Beard Foundation on “Breaking Through The Noise: Climate Solutions That Get Results.” During the panel, Corey shared an update on a partnership we’re particularly proud of, with Neutral. Neutral helps dairy farmers reduce their carbon footprint by investing in climate-smart agricultural practices. By introducing Neutral to our supply chain, we’ve reduced our emissions by 778 metric tons (MT) of CO2e so far in 2024. This is equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by more than 900 acres of U.S. forests in one year—an area roughly the size of 680 football fields. Shake Shack is committed to holding our suppliers accountable, and working with them to advance sustainability is one small way we #StandForSomethingGood.

The collab our tastebuds never saw coming: Black Truffle Lager, created with TALEA Beer Co. as the perfect pairing to our Black Truffle Menu. Talea, NYC’s only women-owned-and-founded production brewery, was an integral part to our culinary and creative process. Co-founders Tara Hankinson and LeAnn Darland say innovating beyond traditional beer spaces and flavors can be key to attract new types of guests. “There are many ‘non-beer bros’ who don’t think craft beer isn’t for them, but we knew if we made a space that was approachable, comfortable, but more refined, we knew we could attract a new audience into craft beer,” says LeAnn. “Being able to play with different flavors, we challenge the pre-conceived notions of what craft beer is—and the Black Truffle Lager does exactly that.” Brewed with real black truffles and porcini mushrooms, it’s available only at select NYC Shacks + Talea taprooms for a limited time! This past weekend, our team traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, to join Niman Ranch's 26th Annual Hog Farmers Appreciation Celebration—a special event that honors the independent family farms that have supplied our bacon since 2011. Our Sustainability Specialist, Corey Blumenthal, took the stage at the Education Summit, highlighting Shake Shack’s sustainability initiatives, including our work in regenerative farming—a topic Niman’s farmers know well. We also had the pleasure of treating many of our farmers to their first-ever Shake Shack burger! And most exciting of all, we awarded the first-ever Shake Shack grant for young farmers through Niman Ranch’s Next Generation Foundation, dedicated to supporting regenerative agriculture. The inaugural recipients, Bryanna and Benjamin Harner, were awarded their grant along with a personal letter from our CEO, Rob Lynch. We are thrilled to continue supporting the next generation of farmers committed to sustainable agriculture. Our partnership with Niman Ranch and its network of independent family farms is more than just business—it’s a commitment to fostering a sustainable food system, where farmers and agriculture take center stage in everything we do.

This #NationalHotDogDay, we’re reflecting on the very first thing on our menu - the humble hot dog, supplied by the same partner for 20 years. Danny Meyer, our founder, first sought out Vienna Beef for the hot dog cart he sponsored in NYC to revitalize Madison Square Park, as part of a larger city project. Vienna’s taste and beef quality was like no other, and when he won a larger bid to open Shake Shack permanently, Vienna was the obvious choice for a long-term supplier. Over the years, Shake Shack and Vienna Beef’s hot dog evolved together; as Shake Shack opened more locations and listened to guests, Vienna developed a flat-top, all-natural beef hot dog that was ‘butterflied’ to cook in-Shacks. The company hand-trims their meats (never frozen!) and uses real hickory wood smokehouses to create the perfect flavor profile. Our working relationship of 20 years with Vienna Beef speaks to our deep commitment to quality ingredients, and we’re thrilled that Vienna Beef has been able to expand with us over the last two decades of Shake Shack. We can’t wait to bring quality hot dogs to even more corners of the globe in the coming years.
