About us
The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) was founded in 1980 to advance the application of the science of healthcare epidemiology. SHEA works to maintain the utmost quality of patient care and healthcare worker safety in all healthcare settings. It upholds its high success rate in infection prevention and control, while applying epidemiologic principles and prevention strategies to a wide range of quality-of-care issues. SHEA is a growing organization, strengthened by its active membership in all branches of medicine, public health, and healthcare epidemiology. The Society's expertise is sought by healthcare regulatory and accrediting agencies, and its scientific voice is influential in guiding decision-making bodies towards rational, effective, cost-conscious policies.

Global collaboration saves lives. The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) emphasizes the critical need for U.S. partnerships with the World Health Organization (WHO). Amid increasing public health challenges, these partnerships are essential for better surveillance, faster detection, and stronger responses to infectious diseases. Withdrawing U.S. involvement from WHO undermines our ability to protect both Americans and the global community. SHEA is unwavering in its support of these vital collaborations. Preparing for Bird Flu: Proactive Steps for Healthcare Facilities Healthcare facilities are encouraged to prepare now for a potential bird flu outbreak, as advised by experts in a commentary published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology (ICHE). While the risk of human infection remains low, proactive measures can mitigate potential impacts: ✅ Monitor local and national cases of bird flu. ✅ Screen patients for flu-like symptoms and exposure to farm animals. ✅ Establish isolation practices and prioritize PPE for staff. ✅ Develop vaccination site plans and maintain transparent communication with teams and communities. The H5N1 outbreak, which has led to mild human cases linked to farm animals, underscores the importance of readiness in healthcare settings. Public transparency and effective communication will be critical to building trust and minimizing anxiety. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ehrw-kVy
