Ossa (Fredricsson) Fisher is the President of Aurora – a self-driving technology company now valued ~$9Bn. Beyond her incredible professional pedigree leading up to Aurora (ie Bain & Company, Goldman Sachs, Match Group, Istation), there are a few things that stuck out to me about Ossa. First, she lives in the future. Each new endeavor she took on in her professional career was fed by an underlying inflection at play. She went to Match Group because the future of dating was online. She went to Aurora because a fully autonomous world on the road is inevitable. Here are some of my favorite takeaways from my She Leads with Carly episode with Ossa: 1️⃣ Decision-Making Formula Take yourself out of the present. Think of your 80-yr old self. What would she say? Would she regret it if you did or didn't do it? 2️⃣ You're Never Ready to Have Kids Women often aim to establish a strong career footing before having kids (ie. make Partner). You'll never feel ready, so don't wait until you're older *bc* of your career aspirations. Thoughts? 2️⃣ Rewire From a "Them" to an "Us In your early career, it's easy to distance yourself from leadership. If you want to rise up, take control of your professional journey. A good first step is to deeply understand leadership decisions. Start to transfer mentally from a "them" to an "us I'm really proud of this episode with Ossa. It was incredibly refreshing to learn from her as she takes us from her childhood growing up in Sweden to studying at Yale University, Stanford University Graduate School of Business and then onto a truly badass career. Thanks, Ossa! Link in comments to the full episode! 👇

The latest She Leads with Carly episode with Maureen F. – Co-Founder and CEO of 10x Emmy award-winning interactive animation studio, Baobab Studios is arguably my most jam-packed one I've ever done. Maureen is so raw and unequivocally herself. Here are some of my favorite takeaways: 1️⃣ If you pretend to be someone you're not for a long enough time, you slowly become that person. Know what you're willing to do to achieve X. It may not be worth it. 2️⃣ Stanford students (+ those from prestigious universities) make shitty interns. Don't think it's beneath you. Be happy you got the job that thousands of others want too. Maureen: "I want the person who's just happy and shuts up, is excited to do the work and makes themselves indispensable." 3️⃣ The dissonance of being a founder: outwardly - supreme confidence, inwardly - insecure overachiever. 4️⃣ Fundraising: practice your pitch in the early days with VCs you are less excited about. By the time you talk to your top ones, your refined and iterated pitch will be ready. 5️⃣ Power of Mentors! Maureen gratefully mentions her mentors and champions as she reflects on her career. I wanted to give them a shoutout as well - Anne Raimondi, Tim LeTourneau, Mark Pincus, Sonia Wong, Vicki Dobbs Beck, Tashana Landray and so many more!!! This aspect of the episode may have been my favorite. It's clear that winning takes a village. It's never a solo journey. Thank you, Maureen F. for sharing your incredible story and special shoutout to Holly Liu for making it happen! Link to the full episode in the comments below 👇

Ep. 134: Lara Cohen | Marketing Exec, Linktree Lara leads all things marketing, partnerships, business development and communications at Linktree, a platform that allows creators to build personalized landing pages with multiple links to all of their content. Before joining Linktree, Lara spent a decade at Twitter (now known as X), where she served as Global VP of Partners & Marketing. In her early days at Twitter, she was the Head of Entertainment and Lifestyle Partnerships, where she shaped and redefined Twitter’s narrative for talent and entertainment partners. One of her standout achievements in this role was spearheading the iconic activation of Ellen DeGeneres’ selfie at the 2014 Oscars. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Rochester and began her career as Editorial Director at Us Weekly back when it was owned by Wenner Media. 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/4de3kAj 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3zkhDW5  sheleadspod.com

Lara Cohen has been at the forefront of every major shift in entertainment media. Now, she's leading marketing, bizdev, and partnerships at Linktree. First, entertainment journalists were the gap between celebrities and the public. She noticed this bridge slowly start to break once Twitter came up – enabling celebrities to voice their thoughts, experiences, and build community directly from their phone. It was infathomable that a fan could get a direct reply from a celebrity until Twitter. Lara jumped at that opportunity as she transitioned from Editorial Director at Us Weekly to Head of Entertainment at Twitter. Next shift: creator economy, influencers. Anyone can be an influencer. This new wave led her to join Linktree: a platform that allows creators to build personalized landing pages with multiple links to all of their content. In my latest She Leads with Carly, we talk about Lara's overall journey with key topics: 1️⃣ The value (and challenges) of being non-technical in a technical company 2️⃣ The power of storytelling in marketing 3️⃣ What makes a great campaign? Including: 🤳 The ingenuity behind the famous Ellen Degeneres selfie at the 2014 Oscars back when Twitter had limited resources competing with Facebook 📨 Lara is also the powerhouse behind Linktree's massive Voter Registration campaign, with celebrities including Olivia Rodrigo, Steph Curry and Kerry Washington behind the charge! More details about the campaign (+ the link to the full episode) are in the comments below!

Ep. 132: Ali Bonar | Co-Founder & CEO, Oat Haus Ali is the Co-Founder and CEO of Oat Haus, the first-ever spreadable granola. Think the texture of nut butter, but the warm, familiar taste of granola. She founded Oat Haus back in 2018 as it was part of her recovery journey from disordered eating. She searched high and low for a nut-free spread that resonated with her, but couldn't find one. She came up with the idea to create one out of oats, and Granola Butter was born! Now, Oat Haus is sold at over 5000 retailers across the country, including Whole Foods Market, Publix Super Markets, Amazon, and Target. All of this earned her a much deserved 2024 @EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Prior to Oat Haus, she thought she would be a doctor. She studied pre-med at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a bachelors degree in nutritional sciences. While she ultimately decided not to become a doctor, she did continue in digital health for a few years, working in marketing at Doximity - the largest medical network. 🎧 Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3T6bfbw 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/4dFX0Cq

At Floodgate, we talk a lot about inflections when looking at early-stage companies. What is an external change event that will create the potential for radical change in how people think, feel and act? For Ali Bonar, it all came down to a core change: the rise of oat milk. Suddenly, oat milk soared in popularity – in stock at every coffee shop. *Ali's thought: If they could make a milk out of oats, why not make a spread out of oats?* CUE: Oat Haus, the first ever spreadable granola butter. The genesis of Oat Haus also came from Ali's personal experience in her recovery from disordered eating. While she tried to bring nuts back into her diet, it was too hard. The nut-free spreads weren't cutting it for her either. Alongside her cofounders, Eric Katz and Ari Schraer, they were the ultimate trifecta – each bringing a different set of superpowers into building Oat Haus. Now, with incredible varieties and flavors – you can find Oat Haus in over 5K retailers across the country, including Whole Foods Market, Target, Amazon, and more! I know I say this a lot, but I love this episode with Ali Bonar on She Leads with Carly. Her vulnerability in sharing about her eating disorder, the lessons she learned in her recovery journey (hint: therapy helped tremendously), the ups and downs of building a CPG company, and so much more. Thank you, Ali! Link to the full episode in the comments 👇

Ep. 131: Camilla Matias| Chief Operating Officer, Brex Camilla is the Chief Operating Officer of Brex, a financial technology company that provides a range of financial services tailored to startups and other businesses. Camilla started at Brex as the Head and VP of Finance before transitioning into the operations side as the SVP of Global Operations before becoming the COO. Prior to Brex, Camilla worked at Kraft Heinz, one of the largest food and beverage companies in the world - starting as a Finance Analyst to becoming the Director of Finance in just under 3 years and she also worked in private equity and portfolio management in Brazil. Camilla earned her Bachelors degree in Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica - ITA, one of the most respected and top universities based in Brazil specializing in Aerospace Science and Engineering. No one at Brex likely knows that their Chief Operating Officer, Camilla Matias, can code 💻. In fact, she's been coding since she was 12 years old. Not only that, she earned a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the top Military and Aerospace Science and Engineering schools in Brazil. She was one of only 6 women in her graduating class of 120 people. Math (and financial models) came naturally to her. So she started her career in finance – working at Kraft Heinz and rising up to Director of Finance in just 3 years. Fast forward a few more years, she's now leading Operations at Brex as the COO. She discovered untapped superpowers that lend itself to being a great COO: aligning cross-functional teams, making quick decisions without all of the information, motivating her team, ensuring there's a plan A, plan B, and even a plan C. I really enjoyed my chat with Camilla Matias on my podcast, She Leads! Beyond her incredible story, we also chat about handling rejection, the cultural differences from Brazil to America (hint: it's pretty odd we plan social dinners weeks in advance), and the early career lessons she takes with her today.. and a LOT more! Thanks Camilla – this one's a fun one – I laugh quite a bit.

Key Don't's if you start a CPG company: 1️⃣ Don't ask your friends and family if they like your product. They can lie. Ask strangers. 2️⃣ Don't waste money on printed packing in the early days. First, discover your call-outs – why are your customers buying your product? You may need to rebrand and repackage anyways. So stick to labels. 3️⃣ Don't burn bridges. Relationships are super important in this industry. It's a small group. You'll see them at trade shows. Lauren Chew founded Love + Chew Brands as a side hustle. After physically going door-to-door, she soon learned where her healthy, vegan and gluten free cookies can thrive. 🍪 Hint: not in a bodega. She had some bumps on the road (COVID effect, sales went to 0 👇), but has persevered to build out this incredible and unique brand. We talk about so much! One of my favorite nuggets: Moms make incredible hires. They take multi-tasking to a whole new level. Thank you for coming on She Leads with Carly, Lauren! Link to the full episode in the comments.

Elena Gomez is the Chief Financial Officer at Toast. Before Toast, she was the CFO at Zendesk for 5 years. Safe to say, Elena knows a thing or two of leading technology companies - financially and strategically. I was lucky to have her on the latest She Leads with Carly episode. Founder Hot Take: "I love fundraising." - Jessica Holton Most founders (understandably) don't enjoy fundraising. It detracts from doing what they actually enjoy – building their company. However, Jessica actually enjoys it. It may be because the early fundraising of her relationship wellness company, Ours, is in the past. But regardless, she sees a lot of positive opportunities in the process. We chat about two simple tips to approach fundraising: 1️⃣ Convince yourself that you’re excited to fundraise. Change the narrative in your mind that you *want* to be there. Try to tap into the initial excitement you have for building your company - the purpose. 2️⃣ Mentally prepare for many no’s. You don't need to go into the conversation expecting a "no", but expect it to be a longer process. Once you get one yes, things start to roll. Beyond fundraising, we chat about: 🎒 Decision process of going to business school (key: no one's ever regretted going, but have a purpose for what you want to get out of it.) 🧩 Co-Founder key traits: Kindness + Communication + Trust 👫 De-stigmatizing couples therapy and founding Ours (personal stories included) ...and so much more! Thanks Jessica for coming on She Leads with Carly – so many great lessons in this one. Link to the full episode in the comments👇

Ep. 127: Audrey Micay Wisch | Co-Founder & CEO, Curious Cardinals Audrey is the Founder and CEO of Curious Cardinals, an edtech company committed to empowering K-12 students to discover and pursue their passions with the guidance of college mentors. Audrey started Curious Cardinals as a freshman at Stanford University, where she was pursuing a Bachelors degree in History. Just one year later, the COVID pandemic hit and Audrey ultimately decided to take a leave of absence from Stanford to pursue Curious Cardinals full time. Today, Curious Cardinals is a global community of over 500 top college students mentoring kids across the globe. Audrey has spoken on CNN, the Today Show and in Forbes to share her vision to create a community of lifelong learners and doers. 'If anything, Stanford University made me feel further drawn away from entrepreneurship initially." - Audrey Micay Wisch Founding a company at Stanford is very much 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑑𝑜. It exudes success. It guarantees freedom. It's sexy. Are the underlying motivations skewed? Perhaps. One year into completing her Stanford degree, Audrey Micay Wisch and her peers were sent home due to COVID. While her 10-year plan to become the next Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a bit shaken up, Audrey took this as a new opportunity. She discovered the power of mentoring and the value it brings when young students are taught by someone they aspire to be - in topics that aren't the conventional ones taught in school (ie: criminal justice or aerospace). Curious Cardinals was created. It was clear they had struck a chord, reaching upwards of $750K in revenue with just her and her cofounder Alec Katz leading. Her intuition told her to continue down this path and drop out of Stanford (despite her original perception of Stanford founders). Why? Because she received incredible advice from Emily White – "Listen to your whispers. If you don't, they become screams." I love this She Leads with Carly episode with Audrey. We chat about all things founding, dropping out of Stanford, the challenges and realities of building a company for the first time and so much more. Thanks Audrey for coming on the pod – the optimism in which you lead your life is incredibly inspiring. Link to the full episode in the comments👇

Ep. 126: Jenna Kerner | Co-Founder & Co-CEO, Harper Wilde Jenna is the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Harper Wilde, the DTC brand disrupting the $16 billion dollar intimate apparel industry with its mission to take the B.S. out of Bra Shopping. Jenna and the brand have been recognized as Forbes 30 Under 30 and Inc. Top 100 Female Founders as well as has been featured in Vogue, the New York Times, The Today Show, Good Morning America and many more. Jenna received her B.A. in Biological Sciences and Economics from Cornell University and her MBA from The Wharton School, where she met her co-founder, Jane Fisher, and together began working on bringing Harper Wilde to life. Prior to Harper Wilde, as you will soon learn, Jenna worked as a consultant at Deloitte for 4 years as well as at digital health startups in a product management role. Jenna Kerner had a habit of self-selecting herself out of things. In other words, you are your biggest roadblock. In Jenna's MBA class at The Wharton School, her group had to select a CEO. While Jenna knew she should volunteer, a more powerful thought crept in: someone else would be better for the job. Fast forward a couple years, she's now the CEO of Harper Wilde with Jane Fisher (the *only* CEO from that group btw). It's quite easy for us to convince ourselves why we shouldn't do something rather than why we should. I had an incredible conversation in the latest She Leads with Carly with Jenna Kerner. Founders, there are many tangible lessons in this one. We chat about: 💰 Pitching Harper Wilde, an intimate apparel co, to mostly male VCs (and key lessons learned in storytelling) 👥 The greatest learning curve and scariest part in the early days - Hiring 💪 The power of resilience in founding a company and more!
