About us
There is a vital need for culturally sensitive support and essential resources that foster healing for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in underserved populations. Shining Light In Darkness Foundation (SLID) is committed to seeing a world free from domestic violence (DV) and sexual assault (SA). SLID works to stop the cycle of domestic violence and sexual assault and its impact through support, education, and advocacy. We believe every survivor of sexual assault and domestic violence is worthy of hope and healing. And we envision a world where every survivor is seen, heard, and supported, so they can feel empowered. So, we’re committed to caring deeply for those in underserved communities so they can heal and rebuild their lives. SLID knows that everyone heals differently. We find the most effective way for victims and survivors to recover from their trauma. We provide holistic healing services and educational programs for raising awareness and prevention. We work with schools, universities, churches, and private groups to bring our DV/SA Curriculum and other programs to local organizations and students. Our services are free and confidential. Our organization serves victims and survivors with emotional support, legal and medical information, and referrals to other community agencies. We provide a variety of support groups for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors. Inspired by our founder's experience dealing with domestic violence and sexual assault, we know that every person heals differently. We believe that all survivors should be seen, heard, and supported to have the opportunity to heal. We are an IRS 501c3 designated public charity (filed as of 2014), and OUR TAX ID NUMBER IS 47-2120872.

On National Dog Day, we celebrate the joy and companionship our pets bring into our lives. But today, let’s also highlight an important issue: the connection between domestic violence and pet abuse. Pets are often used by abusers as a tool of control and manipulation. Threats or harm against a beloved pet can trap individuals in abusive relationships, making it even harder for them to seek help or escape. The fear of a pet being hurt or taken away can force survivors to stay in dangerous situations. Key Points: Control & Coercion: Abusers may threaten pets to control their victims, using fear as a weapon. Emotional Ties: Pets are family. The risk of harm to a pet can keep survivors from leaving abusive environments. Shelter Limitations: Many domestic violence shelters don’t accommodate pets, making it harder for survivors to find safety. Healing: Pets can be crucial to recovery, providing comfort and support during healing. At Shining Light In Darkness, we’re committed to integrating pet-friendly options into our services and raising awareness about the link between pet and domestic violence. On this National Dog Day, let’s honor our loyal companions by ensuring that survivors and their pets receive the support they need Together, we can make a difference for both people and pets. #NationalDogDay #PetSafety #DomesticViolenceAwareness #SupportSurvivors #WeAreShininngALight #SexualAssault #DomesticViolence #PleaseListen2Us #MenWillYouTakeAStand

🚨 Attention College Freshmen & Parents: The Red Zone Is Here! 🚨 As college kicks off, we're entering a crucial time known as the "Red Zone"—the first few weeks when sexual assault risk is significantly higher. Here's how you can stay proactive and protect yourself and your peers: Parents: Have the Talk: Sit down with your child and discuss the importance of consent and safety. Your guidance can make a huge difference. Resource Check: Make sure they know about the campus resources available to them. Information is key! Students: Red Zone Awareness: Understand that this is a high-risk period and stay alert. Your safety is paramount! Know Your Campus: Identify where to find help on campus—counseling, security, and support services. Consent Is Crucial: Remember, every interaction should be consensual. Mutual respect is essential. Stay Vigilant: Trust Yourself: If something feels wrong, don't hesitate to remove yourself from the situation. Be Socially Smart: Stick with friends and keep each other safe. Group settings often offer added protection. Lock Up: Always secure your personal space and avoid sharing too much personal info. Support Your Peers: Look out for your friends and check in regularly. We’re stronger together. Let’s turn the Red Zone into a period of heightened awareness and mutual support. Spread the word and stay safe out there! #RedZoneAwareness #CollegeSafety #StartTheConversation #Empowerment #Consent #CampusResources #SexualAssaultPrevention #StaySafe #WeAreShininngALight #SexualAssault #DomesticViolence #PleaseListen2Us #MenWillYouTakeAStand
