Shook Associate Jarvis James is a product liability litigation attorney with a background in legal research and hands-on experience in diverse legal settings. Jarvis brings a unique perspective to his law practice incorporating his culture and experience in the Dominican Republic. SHOOK: Do you have any standout memories of being with your family in the Dominican Republic? JARVIS: I think often of the time I spent with my family on our uncle's farm in the Dominican. There was a wide array of plants and farm animals, and a lot of land. It seemed to stretch from the mountaintops down to the beach. My father, my brother and I would ride horses up the mountain and each mountain had a little mango spot that acted as a checkpoint. We would eat mangoes as we went from the mountain to the beach, and at the beach we would enjoy the beautiful water and sunsets and just have a wonderful time. That's probably one of my favorite childhood memories. SHOOK: What dish is a go-to for your family when celebrating? JARVIS: Our go-to dish would be tostones, which is essentially a fried plantain. The way my mom cooks it up, it's sliced into circular plates almost and it's made in a way similar to a french fry, but a lot more crunchy with a little bit of salt and pepper, and it comes with essentially a Thousand Island sauce. This is a treasure in my family, especially since my mom doesn't make it as often as she used to. So when she does, it's a race to the dinner table to grab those first. SHOOK: What is something about the country that people may not know? JARVIS: When I go to visit my family, I get to see what's behind the scenes in the Dominican Republic, and what really stands out to me is how festive things are. A lot of times, you can go to the park and there might be a large congregation of people with speakers playing music and having a blast on an average weekday. I think that might be missed by most people who visit who don’t go to those areas. SHOOK: How do you use your personal experience when working with clients? JARVIS: I think my international experience is beneficial for my clients because I've developed a better understanding of how different cultures value different things. For example, that could very beneficial for selecting a jury or doing settlement talks. You need to understand what drives people and I think going through international cultures and experiencing those you definitely get a better understanding of the different values people hold and that can always be used to connect to a better understanding and a swift resolution.
