At Shrieve, we’re passionate about using chemistry to solve the challenges facing modern HVACR systems. During National Chemistry Week, we’re excited to highlight our groundbreaking work in ester-based lubricants, specifically tailored for R-32 refrigerant. The Need for R-32 Specific Lubricants Environmental regulations, including the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, have mandated the phasedown of high-GWP refrigerants, which has pushed the industry to seek alternatives. R-32 is an increasingly popular choice due to its lower global warming potential, but it presents its own challenges when it comes to lubrication. Shrieve’s global team of experts, led by Dr. Jun Liu, Technical Director in China, and Joe Karnaz, Global Director of Technology in the US, tackled these challenges with innovative approaches to lubricant synthesis. Recently, our very own Senior Application Engineer, Manuel Muñoz Alonso, presented Shrieve’s Technical Team’s cutting-edge insights at the 11th International Conference on Compressors and Refrigerants 2024 in Bratislava. In his presentation, "How Changes in Lubricants Can Address Challenges Associated with Hydrocarbon Refrigerants in High-Temperature Heat Pumps", Manuel discussed how lubricant chemistry plays a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency and safety of modern heat pump systems. With the growing demand for eco-friendly refrigerants and high-temperature applications, the right lubricant choice can be a game-changer. Manuel’s approach demonstrated how understanding viscosity, miscibility, and solubility in lubricants can address the challenges posed by natural refrigerants like hydrocarbons—making systems more efficient, sustainable, and resilient in high-temperature operations. Gemspring Capital Closes Continuation Vehicle for Shrieve Chemical Gemspring Capital Management, LLC a middle-market private equity firm, is pleased to announce the closing of a single-asset continuation vehicle that acquired interests in Shrieve Chemical Company. The transaction was led by global private markets investment firm, StepStone Group, and supported by a diverse group of new and existing investors, including a substantial investment from an affiliate of Gemspring and the Shrieve management team. The transaction, and a concurrent refinancing of the Company’s debt facilities, will provide follow-on capital to support organic growth initiatives and strategic acquisitions. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas, Shrieve is a leading, value-added chemicals distributor supporting suppliers and serving customers across the industrial, food ingredient, water treatment, agricultural, energy, specialty lubricant and other segments globally. Research Update: Lilly Coombes' First Month at the Future Oceans Foundation We’re excited to share an update from Lily, the Marine Biology undergraduate sponsored by Shrieve. After her first month at the Future Oceans Foundation, Lily has been immersed in hands-on coral system care and research preparation, laying the groundwork for her upcoming coral spawning project. Key highlights from her first month: 🪸 Gained valuable experience in the husbandry of coral systems, including water changes, treatments, and testing. 🪸 Studied different coral types (SPS and LPS species) to understand their unique care needs. 🌊 Attended an industry show, networking with professionals and advising customers on coral care while ensuring welfare during transit. 🌊 Practiced coral fragging techniques, preparing smaller colonies for research. 🧪 Assisted in lab preparations and finalized project plans for the coral spawning initiative. We’re looking forward to continuing our support of Lily’s research over the coming months and welcoming her to the Shrieve SCP Division in May 2025. During her time with us, Lily will contribute to key marine-focused projects, including the development of biodegradable PAG hydraulic fluids for marine applications.
