  • CITY OF SIERRA VISTA MEDICAL BENEFIT!  Medical insurance premiums covered by the city of Sierra Vista     There are many reasons to join the Sierra Vista Police Department. One of them is our investment in your longevity in the profession and with the SVPD specifically. How do we invest in your longevity with the department? By offering you an excellent medical benefit that could save you as much as $185,760 after you retire, in addition to free health care as an employee.    When you retire, do you want to pay over $1000 a month for insurance? Or would you like that money to go into your bank account?     If you retire from the City with the Public Safety Retirement System/PSPRS (currently 25 years) retirement and have at least 20 consecutive years with the department, you are eligible for 100% coverage of your insurance premiums until you reach the age for Medicare coverage.     If you retire with 10—19 consecutive years with the city, your coverage is prorated at a rate of 5% for each year over 10. You can multiply by the age you leave from the time you retire to age 65 when the benefit ends.     This means an officer who retires with 25 years of service in the PSPRS, 20 years with the City of Sierra Vista, and is 50 years of age at the time they leave service: the value of the benefit is approximately $185,760.  This benefit could reduce or eliminate the need to work extensively post-retirement. $1032 a month to pay for medical insurance after leaving City employment is typically a significant cost to most individuals.     The Medicare Advantage plan at 65 is currently $103 a month so it is very affordable.
