Excelling with Honor

About us

Sigma Nu (ΣΝ) is an undergraduate college fraternity that was founded by James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles and James McIlvaine Riley at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia shortly after Hopkins witnessed what he considered a hazing ritual by upperclassmen at the Virginia Military Institute. Sigma Nu's existence remained secret until the founders publicly announced their new society on January 1, 1869, which is the fraternity's recognized birth date. The fraternity has 279 (active and inactive) chapters and colonies throughout the United States and Canada and has initiated over 227,000 members. The fraternity sponsors various programming including ethical leadership development through its LEAD program and philanthropic events through its Helping Hand Initiative. It recruits new members using its Values Based Recruitment method. Sigma Nu prides itself on its anti-hazing principles, upon which the organization was founded and continues to uphold through its anti-hazing initiative. The fraternity's values are summarized as an adherence to the principles of love, honor, and truth. Because of its military heritage, Sigma Nu retains many military trappings in its chapter ranks and traditions, and places importance on the concept of personal honor.

On the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, the Fraternity would like to honor and recognize Brother Jack Hamlin (Drury). Brother Hamlin, a 102-year-old war hero, is believed to be the last surviving professional athlete to have served at Normandy. In fitting Sigma Nu fashion, Brother Hamlin has been awarded the French Legion of Honor, the highest French decoration and the founders’ inspiration for the Fraternity’s badge. If you have a moment, The Fraternity encourages you to read Brother Hamlin’s recent ESPN profile about his experience in WWII and the baseball career he gave up to serve. The Fraternity is truly proud to have Brother Hamlin as an ambassador of our own Legion of Honor and of the Greatest Generation. #sigmanu #legionofhonor https://lnkd.in/eQEbYv9k

Did you tune in for the 150th Kentucky Derby? Sigma Nu was well-represented during Saturday’s race. In addition to Brother Larry Connolly’s (Washington & Lee) two horses, Dornoch and Society Man, two other horses that competed in the historic event are owned by alumni from the Gamma Upsilon Chapter (Arkansas). Jerry Caroom is the owner of Track Phantom, and Daniel Banks Hamby is the owner of race winner Mystik Dan (pictured). Stronghold was foaled at Mulholland Springs Farm owned by Gamma Iota alumnus John Mulholland (Kentucky). A Race for the [White] Roses, indeed! #kentuckyderby #sigmanu #legionofhonor Photo: (AP/Jeff Roberson)

It’s award season for the Legion of Honor, as many chapters across the country celebrate the end of the 2023-2024 academic year with awards ceremonies coordinated by their campus office of fraternity and sorority life. Sigma Nu’s collegiate chapters served as outstanding ambassadors for the Fraternity, with many taking home impressive hardware and recognition from their respective campuses. Among the Legion of Honor’s recent award winners were 12 chapters recognized as chapter of the year for their community. Chapters earning this distinction include: Kappa (North Georgia) Phi (Louisiana State) Beta Iota (Mount Union) Gamma Iota (Kentucky) Delta Mu (Stetson) Zeta Nu (Montana State) Eta Beta (East Carolina) Eta Omicron (Wofford) Theta Eta (Northern Illinois) Iota Theta (Southern Methodist) Lambda Epsilon (Texas Christian) Mu Kappa (Southeastern Missouri State) The Fraternity extends a hearty Hi Rickety and congratulations to all our collegiate chapters on their recent achievements and to the individual award winners who led their chapters with distinction. The upcoming Summer 2024 Quarterly will include full coverage of all the recent awards activity. #hirickety #legionofhonor #sigmanu

For over 155 years, Sigma Nu Fraternity has developed ethical leaders, fostered a brotherhood that transcends generations, and stood strong upon the honor principle and in direct opposition to hazing. Our rich history invokes a bright future, one that would not be possible without the dedicated support of our current and past volunteers. In honor of National Volunteer Week (April 21-27, 2024), we recognize the impact of volunteer service and extend our deepest thanks to our volunteers for their leadership and the impact they have made on the Legion of Honor. Hi Rickety! #sigmanu #legionofhonor

Kappa Chi Alumnus John Genther (Furman) recently received the Meritorious Public Service Award from the U. S. Coast Guard after saving a man’s life from the water just off Long Island Sound. The young alumnus was working as a commercial whelk fisherman when he spotted an overturned vessel. John rushed to the boat and discovered an older man in the cold water, barely hanging on. John got the man into his boat and rushed him to shore, caring for him until EMS arrived. In coverage of the story, John credits his quick response to the first aid training he received from Fishing Partnership Support Services and the leadership he learned as Commander of the Kappa Chi Chapter. “I think that a rescue like this takes a certain level of maturity and confidence in one’s abilities.” Full coverage of the story can be found at https://lnkd.in/eT6Wh7nU Hi Rickety to Brother Genther for his quick thinking and life-saving action. #sigmanu #legionofhonor

On March 16, The Longhairs, a popular men’s grooming brand and unique global community for men with long hair, will attempt a world-record hair donation for children with medical hair loss at The Great Cut. The company was founded by Zeta Kappa (Fresno State) alumni Chris Healy and Lindsay Barto in 2014 and has since gone global after the duo’s 2018 appearance on “Shark Tank” and investment from Mark Cuban. To promote The Longhairs' record-setting attempt, Chris Healy recently appeared on the morning show “Good Day DC” along with fellow Sigma Nu alumnus Beau Busby (Western Carolina). To learn more about The Great Cut and the Longhairs, visit the links provided in the comments below, including Chris and Lindsay’s profile in the Fall 2018 issue of The Delta.
