We encourage everyone to vote. Read up on your local issues and politicians and vote with your values. Book bans, library funding, election rules, and now even women’s bodies are being legislated by the state, so it’s critical that you vote all the way down the ballot for your local school board, state legislature, judges, election board, and more. https://lnkd.in/gkKb9VRS

Hurricane Helene has devastated multiple areas in the United States, including communities where Silent Book Club chapters and families are based. We have gathered resources to support the people impacted by the storm, and encourage any who can give to donate where we've been told is most helpful from locals. https://lnkd.in/ghq_2AWN #HurricaneHelene

Reading is good for you. But it can be a struggle to find time to read. That's why we introduced Silent Book Club to Exeter back in April! 🤫 Keep reading to hear how we've started logging the mood boosting benefits of communal reading ⬇️ This relaxed monthly meet up offers residents of Exeter & Devon the chance to read peacefully alongside other likeminded individuals, with the option to stay and socialise after an hour of reading. We've heard from many attendees that our monthly sessions are the only time they're able to carve out for reading, and that they truly appreciate a dedicated space that is low commitment compared to a traditional book club. We've met readers new to Exeter that are looking to socialise, witnessed online friends choose to meet for the very first time at #silentbookclub, and have welcomed returning friendly faces month after month. This welcoming environment is why we have started tracking the wellbeing benefits of Silent Book Club; so far we have seen an over 20% lift in attendees' mood following an hour of communal silent reading! 📈 Want to experience the surprising benefits that reading a book alongside a group of strangers can bring? Come along to our next session at The Hour Glass Inn on Tuesday 15th October! Find out more about Silent Book Club here: https://lnkd.in/dekj42PQ

The Silent Book Club we launched in April has been such a successful and warmly received program. Whenever we did public consultations or audience surveys, the number one request was for book-related activities that happened regularly rather than as a one-off or short-term activity. What hadn't been asked for--but was clearly needed--was a comfortable, inviting environment where people could come together in community with very few barriers to entry, where time to switch off and time to be social were valued equally. Exeter UNESCO City of Literature continues to offer free National Book Tokens to whoever needs a new book but might struggle to pay for it, and we're now measuring attendees' well-being before and after each session. The increasing attendance at these events speaks to the cultural and social value of the Silent Book Club initiative. Please come along on the third Tuesday of the month at The Hour Glass, and donate here so we can continue to offer free books to communities across Exeter and Devon. https://lnkd.in/eCQUd-Ac
“It’s about selling books, but it’s also about creating community and being able to connect with strangers.” Eater New York have recently shared the rise in book bars, highlighting the important intersection of reading and community building: https://lnkd.in/gx4DbmgG Though not quite a 'book bar', this kind of relaxed community through reading exists in Exeter thanks to our Silent Book Club, which has been going strong since April of this year. Ours functions as a place that is neither home nor work, allowing individuals to unwind with a spot of communal reading once a month. Not heard of #SilentBookClub? We founded Silent Book Club in 2012 to create a space for readers to connect with each other through a shared love of books. We did not set out to be a political group, but as Roxane Gay powerfully declared, "today, tomorrow and for the foreseeable future, everything we do is political—as readers, as writers, as booksellers, as people." We will stand up to people who ban books. We will fight for equal rights. We will defend our freedom to read, to love, to marry, to vote, to exist. We will use our power and our privilege and the platform we have built to speak out for what we believe in. We will not be silent. https://lnkd.in/gZwPCHW8

Silent bookclubs are a thing here in the ATL lately and I went to my first one today. What a breath of fresh air 🙌🏼 4 inspiring takeaways: 1: you get to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds in your local community and it’s free with an automatic shared interest to spark conversations 2: focused hour, once a month to be device free / disconnected and just enjoy the simple things in life ☀️ 3: It supports local businesses and community spaces! Today I had sparkling blueberry juice with coconut jelly at a Tawainese tea house I would have never tried otherwise 🤩 4: for goodness sake 50+ people in my small area showed up to READ, y’all. The librarian and teacher heart in me was rejoicing inside with glee. Silent Book Club has chapters all over the US and other places. It’s worth it, give it a try!

“In 2021, Graduate Hotels partnered with Silent Book Club—in which literary types gather to read their own books quietly—for “introvert happy hours.” Silent Book Club cofounder Guinevere de la Mare says that attendees appreciate Graduate’s collegiate vibe: “comfy couches, a fireplace, a wall of bookshelves, and a bar, of course.” What’s more, she adds, “Hotels, by design, are a home away from home.” Thanks United Airlines for highlighting our wonderful partnership with Silent Book Club.
