Today, together with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and our 900-strong AECOM Hunt construction workforce, JFK Millennium Partners celebrated our steel topping out at #JFKTerminal6. Thank you to our partners, guests, local elected officials and members of the community who joined us for this important milestone, a tradition marking placement of a construction project's final steel beam. This represents an important step on our journey towards a safe and on-time phase one opening in 2026, when our arrivals and departures hall and the first five gates will become operational. A few Sirina members came together on Friday to build a playset for a local little boy named Cooper who is currently battling with cancer. Cooper, 2 1/2 years old, is a remarkable little boy who was unfortunately diagnosed with Retinoblastoma at 10 months old. Retinoblastoma, is a rare type of eye cancer that primarily affects young children, typically under the age of five. Normally this cancer will stay above the neck, unfortunately for Cooper this was not his case. The cancer ended up spreading to multiple organs throughout his body, and luckily Cooper was able to beat all of the odds! Unfortunately the issue with this cancer is the relapses. A few months back Cooper’s Family had leaned that the cancer is back and this time, it is in his bone marrow. Over the next few months Cooper will be back under going treatments to fight this terrible disease and beat the odds once again! Cooper truly is an inspiration to all! We are hopeful that he will conquer his next battle with this terrible disease and will be sharing part of his journey along the way. Thank you to RocSoild for helping us find this incredible family and be able to put a smile on their face during this tough time. It may not be New York... but we would like to give a big congratulations to Minneapolis for installing life safety systems in every Public Housing high-rise! We are happy to see others take fire safety seriously. In recent years, both New York City and Minneapolis have faced tragic incidents involving fires in public housing high-rises, highlighting critical issues surrounding fire safety regulations and the need for modern safety measures. New York City Fire Incident In January 2022, a devastating fire in a 19-story apartment building in the Bronx resulted in the deaths of 17 residents, primarily due to smoke inhalation. The fire was sparked by a faulty space heater, and the tragedy was exacerbated by security doors that failed to close automatically, allowing smoke to spread rapidly throughout the building. This incident underscored the urgent need for updated fire safety protocols and regulations in older buildings that often lack modern fire suppression systems. Minneapolis experienced its own tragedy on November 27, 2019, when a fire broke out on the 14th floor of Cedar High Apartments, claiming the lives of six residents. At that time, only a fraction of public housing high-rises had sprinkler systems installed. In response to this disaster, local leaders and federal representatives mobilized resources to retrofit all 42 public housing high-rises with sprinklers ahead of schedule by 2024. This proactive approach aims to prevent future tragedies and ensure resident safety. Both cities illustrate the dire consequences of inadequate fire safety measures in public housing. While New York City grapples with aging infrastructure and regulatory challenges following its deadly incident, Minneapolis has taken significant steps toward improving safety standards after learning from its own tragic experience.
