Berkeley Space Center is an opportunity to redefine how large-scale developments are designed, constructed, and managed—not just from the ground up, but from the underground up. This project plans to achieve an 84% water diversion rate and will not use natural gas for power generation. Its design will enable the use of recycled water for both landscaping and building interiors, as well as stormwater retention. 1201 Bryant was once a 1927 warehouse that, after a major renovation, is now outfitted for an autonomous vehicle market leader. We stripped away old mechanical units and corrugated steel sheds to reveal the building’s entire Art Deco facade, restored the historic windows and reconfigured the entrance to include a garden and courtyard. New mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety and seismic structural systems were also installed. 1 De Haro exemplifies SKS’s commitment to sustainable development. We saw an opportunity to introduce cross-laminated timber to the Bay Area. The result was a faster construction time and a structural capacity of concrete while being a constructed of renewable resource. Designed to resemble a jewel box, its wooden core is enveloped by a shimmering glass curtain wall that illuminates at night, seamlessly integrating into its urban surroundings while making a distinctive architectural statement. https://lnkd.in/gw7yU4sB
