Now that it's officially November, the speech department at SLEA Therapies is getting ready for Thanksgiving! One of our amazing therapists, Gurwin, has transformed her therapy room into a Thanksgiving paradise. Her kiddos love reading books about the upcoming holiday, while working on their speech sounds, answering wh- questions, and recalling information. Happy AAC Awareness month! When working with AAC users it is so important to use meaningful and motivating activities to model language. This super cute client pictured above LOVES to listen to “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes”. When he was introduced to his AAC device, we used “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” as an opportunity to model and expand language. Here’s how this classic song acted as an incredible therapy tool. Body Part Vocabulary: Use AAC to model and label each body part (head, shoulders, knees, toes) with pictures or symbols as you sing along. Repetition helps reinforce understanding and recall. Core Words: Pausing a song provides opportunities for high-frequency core words like “more” and “go,” during sessions. Modeling these words on the AAC device can teach users how to use them in everyday language. Action & Movement: Pairing the AAC device with physical movement (touching body parts) strengthens connections between words, actions, and meaning, making learning more interactive and engaging.
