"This sensor allows for a notification to be made to my emergency operations center, to my cell phone, to my email saying, 'Hey, it's picking up something', we need to take a look at it. We need to investigate it a little bit more", said Nathan Whittington, the emergency manager for Jefferson County. We love to see our members in the news! Colorado is turning to innovative solutions like N5 Sensors, Inc. to improve wildfire detection and response times. This cutting-edge technology, already deployed in counties like #Boulder and #JeffersonCounty, is designed to detect wildfires earlier, especially in remote and rural areas. By providing real-time data, the #N5Shield helps firefighters and emergency teams mobilize faster, potentially preventing small blazes from escalating into devastating wildfires. As wildfires grow more frequent and intense, tools like the N5 Shield are essential in enhancing preparedness and protecting communities. It's a crucial step forward in safeguarding Colorado’s vulnerable landscapes from the growing threat of wildfires. Meet #accelerator member, Dr. Mariela Alfonzo, founder and CEO of State of Place! State of Place, is an #AIBased predictive analytics software that optimizes and communicates the value of built environment investments. Growing up in a low-to-middle-income neighborhood in Miami, where poor urban design negatively impacted nearly all facets of her life—including the death of a childhood friend who was killed by a driver while crossing a street designed more for cars than for people—she passionately pursued a Ph.D. in urban planning, focusing on urban design and behavior. For nearly 25 years, her work has concentrated on quantifying how the built environment impacts social, health, environmental, and economic value, with the goal of using a more data-driven, evidence-based approach to advocate for more livable, equitable, and sustainable communities. 💻 State of Place, leverages the power of #MachineLearning to extract data on over 125 urban design features (e.g., sidewalks, benches, crosswalks, trees) from digital street-level images, which are measured for walkability and the overall quality of the built environment. 📊 State of Place has also developed a series of forecasting models that link this index to the quadruple bottom line, including real estate values, climate change factors, crime, traffic safety and behavior, and public health outcomes. 🌐 The software visualizes this data, translates it into urban design recommendations that optimize the communities' prioritized outcomes, and quantifies the benefits of potential built environment investments. ⭐ This helps both private and public sector citymakers maximize their often limited budgets and communicate this value to secure buy-in, approvals, and funding for their plans, projects, and policies. In August 2024, State of Place was awarded a #SmallBusinessInnovationResearch (SBIR) grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation to apply AI in advancing the creation of "Complete Streets" that safely and conveniently accommodate all modes of transportation, especially the most vulnerable users of the street. This is the second SBIR for the company. Since then, they have helped over 45 citymakers use data, evidence, and technology to more effectively, efficiently, and equitably foster just and thriving places.
