The Smart Growth Partnership (SGP) is accepting nominations for our esteemed Smart Growth Excellence Awards! Communities all over the United States are using the principles of smart growth to protect and enhance the natural environment while strengthening their economies. From reusing previously developed land; providing more housing and transportation choices, to preserving critical natural areas and developing vibrant places to live, work, shop, and play. When properly implemented, these techniques can protect air, water, and land resources and make communities more attractive to businesses, residents, and visitors. The SGP recognizes communities and projects that have successfully used the principles of smart growth to preserve and enhance their quality of life while helping to protect public health and the environment. We want to recognize projects, policies, and communities that have used approaches that involve a broad variety of stakeholders and are innovative, yet could be replicated. CELEBRATING FLORIDA'S ARBOR DAY! Smart Growth Partnership partnered with the Sailboat Bend Volunteer Group and the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks & Recreation to celebrate Florida Arbor Day this morning at Argyle Park, a retention area for a portion of the Sailboat Bend neighborhood. Smart Growth Partnership, Sailboat Bend Volunteer Group, and the City of Fort Lauderdale have been slowly creating a space for water loving plant species with the goals being to learn and teach others about protecting and preserving wetlands and ensuring access to natural areas – principles all partners agree on! Arbor Day is a day of observance that promotes the benefits of trees in the urban environment and encourages tree planting and care. In celebration of Florida’s Arbor Day, citizens are encouraged to do their part in helping to reduce air pollution, conserve energy, and beautify the State of Florida by planting trees. Planting native trees protects the environmental balance and beauty of the Sunshine State by preventing the spread of invasive plants and offsetting some of the potential impacts of climate change. #arborday #floridaarborday #plantatree
