🍃 Be a part of the change! Embrace sustainable construction practice. 🎯 Boosting Research for a Smart and Carbon Neutral Built Environment with Digital Twins This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program under grant agreement No 101078997 💪 Strengthening KTU’s capacity to conduct research on the next generation of digital twins to ensure the transition to a smart, sustainable, resilient and carbon neutral built environment. The SmartWins project aims to create a network between the Sustainable Energy in the Built Environment Research Group (SEBERG) of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) in Lithuania and leading institutions in the field of energy assessment and sustainability of buildings. The partners will share with KTU their knowledge in the use of Industry 4.0 practices, support KTU to strengthen its research capacities and develop a long-term research collaboration.

    Excited to share our latest research on Capturing building data for establishing digital twins of buildings for quick energy performance assessment. In this paper, we propose a survey-based process to quickly and non-intrusively collect information about a building to allow for an initial energy assessment. We introduce the survey to collect data and show how the survey data can be converted to input for a building performance simulation model. To validate the survey, we benchmark simulated results based on models of eight different buildings across Europe. For each of the buildings we compared the results of building performance simulations of simple models generated from survey data with detailed models generated from BIM models. The results show that simulated deviations are between 0.75% to 40.57% between the two types of models. We conclude that the survey-based approach can be a reasonable starting point for first quick energy assessments for most type of buildings.     🌍 Discover the Building Clusters of the European Union! 🏘️ Did you know that the European Union is divided into three regions based on the characteristics of its building stock? 🏠🔍 Our talented SmartWins junior researchers have conducted an in-depth analysis of residential buildings, identifying common geometries and features across three clusters:   📍 Northern and Western Europe 📍 Central and Eastern Europe 📍 Southern Europe Additionally, we have analyzed the minimum thermal requirements for buildings in each Member State, exploring differences in legislation and climate conditions. 🌡️🌍 As a result of this research, we've developed six BIM models of representative buildings, which were used for a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the environmental impact and thermal performance of these structures. ♻️🏗️ Stay tuned for the exciting insights from this comparative assessment! 🚀 The results will reveal fascinating correlations between thermal performance and environmental impact! 🌱✨ #BIM #LCA #Construction

    🔗 Digital Twins in Construction: Bridging the Physical and Digital Worlds 🏗️ As the construction industry increasingly adopts Digital Twins for built asset management, understanding the interplay between physical building geometry and the Digital Twin counterpart remains critical. The complex nature of building geometry presents challenges in accurately integrating it into the Digital Twin, compounded by the infrequency of post-construction geometry updates. Clear criteria for updating building geometry data are essential to ensure Digital Twin fidelity. These updates, derived from technologies such as laser scanning or UAVs/photogrammetry, require careful consideration of a building’s lifecycle and type. Regular or real-time updates, facilitated by methods such as AI and ML, ensure the accuracy of the Digital Twin but require careful data processing to identify structural elements. Embracing these insights leads the way to a robust Digital Twin, enabling better asset management in the construction industry.     Traditional Models Triumph in Traffic Prediction: A Comparative Study🚦📊 At SmartWins, in collaboration with the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) research centre, our researchers assessed various models to improve traffic congestion prediction using a Machine Learning-based multi-step forecasting approach. This study is particularly valuable for areas with limited historical data. See previous post: https://lnkd.in/eT4Kwhei Our comparative analysis revealed that traditional shallow learning models, such as Decision Tree Ensemble regressors, outperform Deep Learning implementations. Depending on the traffic location and forecasting horizon, different algorithms excel. Notably, Extra Tree and Random Forest algorithms show superior performance for longer forecasting horizons across almost all traffic locations.
