When I had my first meeting with Michelle and Jeff from Innovation Network Gathering, it was introductions, and then the beginning conversation of what would become my talk. It went something like this:
ING: So what do you want to talk about?
Me: What do you mean?
ING: You can talk about whatever you want.
Me: You mean you don’t have, like, a set track or series of topics I should align to?
ING: Nope. We want to hear from you. What is something that you’re passionate about? What’s something you can talk about in a way, and bring yourself to in a way, that nobody has before.
And with that - my mind was racing, and the next several months led to this video.
I’ve given a lot of stage presentations. As a creator of products, I’ve happily shared the work that my teams and I have put our passion and energy into. Sometimes I even get the chance to talk about ways to push the industry forward, and to challenge our status quo.
Inside my company, I get to talk to rising leaders about their journey and my own, and how we can support and advocate for one another.
The voice I brought to Innovation Network Gathering was one I’ve found through all of those experiences, and in in-depth conversations with friends, and with my kids, and in books and specialty discussions.
It’s one that, I hope, gives voice to the frustrations of a clinical trial history that let some of us down. That was not historically inclusive, and so found treatments that better served a narrow view of humanity. And my growing concern that the potentially revolutionary technology at our fingertips with AI, requiring vast amounts of historic data, will find that data lacking to create new solutions that are as inclusive as we deserve.
I love our industry. It motivates and inspires me. And it changes lives every day. We owe it to ourselves and to each other to challenge it to improve, and to give a voice to the underrepresented people, and their data, that our history missed.
