#DisabilityPrideMonth reminds us to recognize the beauty of our diverse experiences as we honor the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on this day in 1990. At a time when four in ten adults with disabilities experience unfair treatment in healthcare settings, at work, or when applying for public benefits (according to the Urban Institute), SMRT is committed to intentionally advocating and designing for a more inclusive world that incorporates ADA-compliant design features for individuals with disabilities to foster dignity and equality for all.

Bar Harbor Story provides a look at the conceptual design for the 42,600-square-foot expansion of Mount Desert Island Hospital, featuring contributions from our very own Derek J. Veilleux, AIA, EDAC, NCARB, and Philip Chaney. This project aims to combine more than a century of healthcare tradition with modern design and functionality to serve a community that experiences a surge of visitors during the summer months. The local emergency department's volume triples during this season, highlighting the critical need to effectively accommodate the increase. Together with MDI Hospital, we're dedicated to enhancing healthcare quality and experiences for the community, reinforcing our commitment to innovative and patient-centric design.
Mount Desert Island Hospital is embarking on an exciting new chapter, building on its 125-year history with a major hospital expansion and renovation to bring it into the 21st century of care delivery. We truly value the trust Mount Desert Island Hospital has placed in the SMRT Architects & Engineers team to help realize their bold vision for community-focused, quality, patient-centered care on Mount Desert Island. Check out our work for L.L.Bean’s redesigned headquarters featured on Office Snapshots! SMRT transformed a former 365,000-square-foot windowless warehouse into a vibrant, light-filled office space, integrating sustainability with a deep appreciation for the outdoors. The redesigned space not only honors L.L.Bean's legacy of outdoor enthusiasm but also fosters a collaborative work environment with a deep connection to nature. Thank you for the feature!

Embracing a transparent work culture is key to building trust and collaboration within our firm. Last week, our president, Brad Hodges, traveled to our four offices to gather staff for our quarterly fireside chats. These are more than just company updates; they're a cornerstone of our commitment to openness. It's in these moments that we not only share insights and achievements but also strengthen our social connections, creating a vibrant, supportive community. Sound like a workplace where you could thrive? We're hiring! https://lnkd.in/ezC57Uug

A look at one of our latest collaborations with RayzeBio, which recently joined the Bristol Myers Squibb family. The former Amazon warehouse has been transformed into a 77,000-square-foot revolutionary research, development, and manufacturing facility for radiopharmaceuticals. To ensure the space fully met RayzeBio’s programmatic and design needs, SMRT worked in close partnership with the client to maximize the use and functionality of the existing footprint. “The SMRT team has consistently gone above and beyond at each step of the process. They’re a true client-centric partner.” – Kevin Rosenthal Vice President, Site Head/RayzeBio, A Bristol Myers Squibb Company Learn more about how this facility is a testament to inclusivity and innovation: https://ow.ly/hNqe50Srak0 📸 Megan Ratts Photography

Attending the dedication of the Dr. Glenn A. Cummings Courtyard at the University of Southern Maine last week was a memorable occasion. Named for the 13th President of USM, the courtyard sits at the heart of the campus, embodying the spirit of innovation and community engagement he championed. The dedication celebrated Cummings and his visions for this half-acre space and the broader vision it represents for USM and the southern Maine region. SMRT is honored to be a part of the largest campus development project in USM's history, including the McGoldrick Center for Career & Student Success and the Portland Commons Residence Hall. These projects represent a significant milestone in moving toward a more sustainable campus.
