Kicking off Fall 2024, three LACCD campuses are offering four baccalaureate degree programs—with two more coming soon at two other campuses! Community college-based bachelor’s degrees are bridging the gap in affordability and accessibility, preparing students for high-skill, high-paying jobs with career-focused education. As students head back to college, we turn our attention to the experiences of "comebacker" students—those who took a break from their educational journeys and later returned. On October 10, 2024, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals will be hearing arguments from defenders of the DACA program as well as the opposition who wants the program to end. A decision could come anytime after that. The court’s decision not only impacts half a million active DACA recipients but millions more — including their families, dependents, employers, customers, students, neighbors, and friends. The DACA program not only benefits the 550,000 recipients but also strengthens the U.S. economy and keeps families together. We are thrilled to share that this month, seven out of the thirteen bills supported by our network during the 2024 legislative session were signed into law! These policy wins, including a ban on legacy admissions in California, are a major step forward in breaking down barriers to college access. These new laws will strengthen financial aid, address students’ basic needs, eliminate equity gaps, and improve post-graduation transitions for underrepresented students. Today, the U.S. Department of Education released a white paper summarizing key issues & coming improvements to the #FAFSA. Early & predictable timelines, greater transparency, more resources for students, counselors, & colleges, enhanced call center capacity, & more.
