Transforming health professions education to create a more just and equitable health care system for all.

About us

Social mission is a national movement, focused on health equity and training health professionals as agents of more equitable health care. This takes us beyond centuries-old conventions in health professions education to train providers prepared to build a system that is not only better, but fairer. Our movement started with a 2012 conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that brought national attention to medical schools with strong social mission commitment, created a forum for collaboration and shared innovations, and legitimized the important role of medical education in addressing social inequities. We are now Social Mission Alliance. Vision Health professions education in which social mission is present, prominent, and valued to drive health equity and improved health for individuals, communities, and nations. Mission Social Mission Alliance aims to promote social mission in health professions education by networking learners, teachers, community leaders, health policy makers and their organizations to advance equity in education, research, service, policy, and practice. What is social mission? The social mission of a health professions school is the contribution of the school in its mission, programs, and the performance of its graduates, faculty and leadership in advancing health equity and addressing the health disparities of the society in which it exists.

  • Dominant or malignant narratives in medicine limit our understanding of the root causes of health inequities. So how can we transform them to advance health equity? During the next National Health Equity Grand Rounds event, "Rewrite the Script: Narrative Transformation for Equity in Health" on Nov. 21 at 2:00 PM CT, explore how we can reshape the stories we tell about ourselves, our communities, and the challenges we face. Step into a better understanding of our role as health care professionals in identifying harmful dominant narratives and moving beyond individual action to advance health equity. As Race Forward explains, “when our stories and messages align with the narratives we want to elevate, we create impact.” Register here: https://lnkd.in/gYcxhyMQ

  • 🕸 👻 A spooky article for your Halloween: new Health Affairs Forefront article lays out the implications of Project 2025 on reproductive care and the the health workforce. What would a world with Project 2025 policies look like? - Federal policies compelling DA's to prosecute abortion-related cases. - Removal of HIPAA protection on abortion-related records; allowing confidential patient information to be turned over to law enforcement. - Limits on required abortion-related training programs for health professionals. - Removal of Mifepristone from the market. - Undercutting labor organizing, making it harder for health professionals to unionize. This article isn't all tricks with no treat. The authors also offer several recommendations: 🍬 Ensure that violations of federal rulemaking laws are properly challenged in court. 🍬 Adopt policies to curb "Judge Shopping" (when a plaintiff brings a case in a single-judge division with an ideologically aligned judge to get their preferred outcome.) 🍬 Adopt the ABC test as a federal standard for employee classification. 🍬 Congress should pass the Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act. "Protecting both patients and providers should remain a priority in any health and labor policy discussion, and the risks posed by such sweeping reforms must be carefully weighed." - Read: Project 2025’s Labor And Reproductive Health Policies: Implications For The Health Workforce https://lnkd.in/e8Eesqs7 Authors: Finn Dobkin, Julia Strasser, Patricia Pittman, & Edward Salsberg Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity

  • Medical school applicants all have different priorities when it comes to choosing the right school for them. Similarly, medical schools themselves have different priorities. That’s why a “one size fits all” system of rankings doesn’t work. Ratings, on the other hand, gives power back to the individual to decide what to prioritize. Help us get more schools to measure what matters; encourage your medical school deans to join us. You can find an email template with suggested language at https://lnkd.in/eidX2YRD. The Social Mission Metrics self-assessment is a tool for health professions schools to evaluate their social mission and learn how they are doing in each domain. With feedback reports, we give schools resources for how to improve in each of these domains. We don’t publicize results because we hope this will keep schools honest. Right now, all US medical schools have been invited to evaluate their social mission. The self-assessment closes at the end of October.

  • Tuition-free medical education is making it harder for low-income and underrepresented minority applicants. Toyese Oyeyemi says, “it's admirable that private philanthropists are aiming their attention and resources towards supporting the next generation of healthcare providers. What we need though is for reasonable accountability from the institutions receiving these dollars.” Despite good intentions, tuition-free medical education has been shown to result in a more competitive application process that still advantages wealthier applicants. This happened at NYU, and is likely to continue as more medical schools receive major funding, like Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “If these schools are genuine in their mission to service and closing disastrous gaps to accessing education and even direct care, they can take a step forward by allocating these funds for students who demonstrate commitments to serving the underserved, students committed to primary care, and capable trainees who simply may not have had the same avenues to medical school as their counterparts with more resources to access.” As Oyeyemi said to Rose Horowitch for a recent article in The Atlantic, these philanthropic donations aimed at decreasing barriers to medical education “need to be coupled with admissions reform or accountability efforts to have any effect.” https://lnkd.in/gFqZMNBb
