The Society recognizes the life and work of Vicki Freimuth, a pioneer in health communication, who died October 20, 2024. Dr. Freimuth was the Director of Communication for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for eight years. She joined the faculty at UGA in 2004 and held a joint appointment between Grady College of Journalism and Communication Studies in Franklin College and developed the Center for Health and Risk Communication. Freimuth received many accolades for her work over the years, including the prestigious K. Everett M. Rogers Award from the American Public Health Association and an honorary doctorate from Emerson College. Her contributions to the field laid the foundation for many graduate programs in health communication at schools of journalism, communication, and public health that are modeled on the first one Freimuth started at the University of Maryland. She is remembered as a friend, role model, encouraging colleague, mentor, researcher, and trailblazing leader. https://lnkd.in/eHz5yJkQ

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women after skin cancer. Mammograms can detect breast cancer early, possibly before it has spread. Finding breast cancer early is key to successful treatment. That’s why every October, we come together to raise awareness about the disease and to encourage people to get screened. https://lnkd.in/ep-qvys
