As the world’s largest plastic producer, the United States has an obligation to call for a legally-binding treaty that prioritizes reducing plastic production. Empty promises won’t suffice. Tell the U.S. government that we need a strong #PlasticsTreaty that protects frontline communities by addressing the crisis at its source: fossil fuel extraction and plastic production. https://lnkd.in/dpBrgx7Y

About us
SOCIETY OF NATIVE NATIONS About Us The Society of Native Nations (SNN) is an organization founded by a small group of Native people in Texas with members in many states that are dedicated to advocating for our people and the earth by helping to protect and preserve our native culture, spirituality, teachings, medicine, and way of life. Each of our founding members has experience working with our people and other organizations that bring a unique set of values and perceptions to SNN. Exposure and witness to racism, appropriation, and exploitation of our way of life have compelled each of us to stand united against social and environmental injustice. Our teachings tell us that Creator tasked Native people to be the "keepers of the earth." We believe we are environmentally conscious through our DNA and because our lifeways and culture parallel the health of Mother Earth. Through ancestral memories, prayer, and determination, we strive to help bring a positive change to our people and Mother Earth. Mission Society of Native Nations(SNN)-is a Non-Profit 501(C)(3) organization and was founded to fulfill the express mission of helping to protect and preserve the way of life, culture, spirituality, teachings, and medicines of the Native indigenous people of North and South America. Through awareness and education of our culture and spirituality, we believe people can better understand and respect one another to create true unity. Together we can succeed in addressing the issues we face in our Native communities, such as cultural racism, appropriation, exploitation, education, environmental issues, wildlife conservation, and the many social injustice issues that Native American people face in this world. Our goal is to bridge the gap between Native communities and unite to address the problems we face by providing the programs, events, and actions to accomplish our mission.

The discussions at COP16 cannot happen without considering the role of Indigenous communities in protecting biodiversity and thriving ecosystems. Approximately 40% of Earth’s remaining intact ecosystems are sustained by Indigenous peoples. Globally, biodiversity thrives on Indigenous-governed lands, which play a vital role in protecting biological diversity through land stewardship, management practices, and traditional knowledge. Lands managed by Indigenous communities tend to present better conservation results even when compared with other models of protected areas. We can see this happening, for example, in the Amazon rainforest, where deforestation rates in Indigenous territories are lower than in other state-protected areas. Despite all this evidence, most governments around the world ignore that recognizing Indigenous territories is the most effective solution to protect thriving ecosystems. On the contrary, too many times, Indigenous peoples have been forcibly removed from their ancestral lands in the name of conservation. These violent displacements not only lead to human rights abuses but also tend to dismantle Indigenous knowledge systems that have protected fauna and flora for millennia.
Indigenous territories & peoples are key to achieving COP16’s 30×30 target (commentary)

🚨 Over 130 organizations bring to António Guterres attention the troubling statements made by UNEP Executive Director, Mrs. Inger Andersen🚨 Her public statements: 🔴 Exhibit a concerning pattern that prejudges the outcome of the negotiations. 🔴 Give a restrictive interpretation of the future instrument’s scope by focusing exclusively on single-use and short-lived plastics, neglecting extraction and production within the entire plastic lifecycle. 🔴 Characterize discussions around production caps as “not intelligent,” which disrespects Member State representatives, parliamentarians, independent scientists, economists, Indigenous Peoples, frontline communities, workers, and civil society organizations. We respectfully ask that Mrs. Andersen: 1️⃣ Retract her public statements containing subjective affirmations about the discussion on production caps not being intelligent 2️⃣ Refrain from exceeding her role as the convener of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC). 3️⃣ Align her public communications with the most recent scientific evidence, regarding the comprehensive scope needed to effectively address the plastic pollution crisis.

A report from IPEN and Beyond Plastics presents a critical examination of the long history of failure of chemical recycling and the threats it poses to the environment, human health, and environmental justice. https://lnkd.in/e26yHeQZ The findings demonstrate that chemical recycling produces large quantities of hazardous waste, releases toxic air pollution, and contributes to climate change. The report debunks the myth that we can recycle our way out of the plastic pollution problem and supports the case for capping and then phasing down plastic production.
