We’re up for the 20th Anniversary Award for Most Significant UK Remediation or Regeneration Project, recognising our work on The Avenue Project and The Olympic Park Project. Both of these projects reflect our commitment to sustainable delivery and deep technical expertise. The winning entries will be announced live on 17 October 2024 at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester. Today, we pause to honor and remember the lives that forever changed on September 11, 2001. Why does sustainability, resiliency, and wellness in architecture matter? Robert Werthamer, Director of Sustainability at Zyscovich said, "One thing that is really beautiful is that sustainability gives you the understanding of a lot of natural processes that you have to take into consideration. Resilience is about how the design decisions react to those natural forces. Wellness, that speaks to the general purpose. I don't think there is architecture without people, not just making it, but as the user and occupant. Wellness amplifies that, extends it, and understands the conditions. By understanding peoples' sensitivities to different building products then it becomes more of a universal design, and you can make it healthy for someone who is sensitive to those products." Last week I ended my 11-week internship with SOCOTEC USA at the New York City office, and exciting as that is, I believe I made a great experience out of it. I was admitted to the Green Team (Energy/Sustainability) where I was embraced as part of the team from the beginning, and for that I will always be grateful. I worked with my colleagues in influential Highrise projects in Manhattan for LEED accreditation, in which I was responsible for running simulations and calculations for Indoor Environmental Quality parameters. Besides that, I was exposed and worked closely with EPDs documents, materials’ U-values, and other related topics. By the end of the program, I was invited to present my work to the Green Team spread around the US, and formally to the whole company, which was a great opportunity to showcase my developments throughout the summer. This was my first time working in a big corporate environment, and I would like to thank everyone at the SOCOTEC team, especially at the NYC office, for opening their doors to me and all the other interns - I am glad to have been a part of this. A special thanks to the Green Team and my supervisor, Emily Billheimer, for being such a great mentor and sharing an exciting summer together. Lastly, I thank the interns’ group for their partnership and enthusiasm during these weeks, it was lovely to get to know each of you. Excited to see our next endeavors. In conversation with Jeffrey Huber, he told me that his daughter recently asked him a question, "Dad, what do you love about architecture?" and he replied, "What I love about architecture is the fact that I can go ahead and change my community. I can go ahead and have a legacy beyond my life that can really touch you and your grandkids. That to me is why architecture matters."
