Sojourner House is beyond excited to announce that Ariel Tavares will be the host of our 14th Annual Masquerade Ball! If you’re unfamiliar with her work, Ariel is a poet, photographer, creative director, and self described “multi-hyphenate funky storyteller.” She believes in the power of words, the power of people, and the power of art to bring communities together. Her work aims to make people feel seen, feel less alone, and feel beautiful; she aims to capture that same beauty from everyday life, mining magic from the mundane. As the host of this year's Masquerade Ball, Ariel plans to incorporate elements from her most recent (and highly celebrated) exhibition, Garden of Dreams, into our Enchanted Forest festivities. This exhibit centered around the dreams of Rhode Islanders (how they grow, what feeds them) and the societal barriers that often prevent them from following those dreams. At Sojourner House, we’ve found that most of our clients – all survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking – dream of similar things. They dream of safety, respect, security, freedom, and happiness; for themselves, and for their children. With this year's Enchanted Forest theme, we plan to celebrate the work the Sojourner House team does to tend to those dreams. Like gardeners, our advocates plant seeds for the future. They identify what their clients need to flourish, provide nourishment and consistent care, and remove any barriers (or weeds) that present challenges to growth and healing. We hope you'll consider joining us (and Ariel) on November 22nd for this magical event! Tickets: https://lnkd.in/dzJDDJxr

Looking for something good to read? Brown University just published a profile on Corinne Lepage, a long time Sojourner House volunteer and all around superstar! The article details, among other things, the horticultural therapy project Corinne completed at Sojourner House this Spring. The purpose of this project was to help clients destress, reduce anxiety, and practice self-care through the power of nature. As part of the project, Corinne facilitated a number of workshops, including: ◾Words of Kindness: A family friendly activity painting kindness rocks for our new garden. ◾Finding New Ways to Grow: Create pothos clippings to bring home and grow ◾Learn to Pot and Care for a Succulent The project is over now, but Corinne isn't done lending a hand! As the article states, Corinne is about to oversee the creation of a pollinator garden at Sojourner House’s Drop-In Center on Westminster Street! To learn more about this project, and all of the other wonderful work Corinne has done at Sojourner House, click the link below. https://lnkd.in/egEytg26 📸Nick Dentamaro/Brown University

Big thanks to our friends at Bryant University who not only painted the fence at one of our shelter properties, but also helped us clean and organize our storage area in the basement! We appreciate you! If you and your workplace/team/club ever want to do a day of service at Sojourner House, please reach out to our Volunteer Manager, Justine Mainville Pagano! Her email is jmainvillepagano@sojournerri.org. We can always use more hands involved in the work!

Earlier this week, Ocean State Stories published a wonderful article about the work that groups like Ten Men are doing in our community to engage men in conversations about domestic violence and healthy masculinity. The article, written by Ashley L. Bendiksen, also highlighted a few of the resources that are available for male-identifying survivors of abuse in our state, including those at Sojourner House. Ashley interviewed Sojourner House's CARE Team Advocate, Edgard Barroso, about his support group, El Espejo, and the two discussed some of the barriers that male survivors often face when trying to access supportive services. If you’re unfamiliar with El Espejo, it’s a resource for Spanish-speaking men who are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or human trafficking. The group meets weekly to discuss topics like masculinity, machismo, self-esteem, coping strategies, anger, stigma, and the societal implications to trauma. We had a lovely visit yesterday from the sisters of JWU's Sigma Gamma Rho sorority! Their group donated 22 back packs to children in our shelter and housing programs and filled them with notebooks, folders, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, and other back-to-school goodies! It was an extremely kind gesture and our team is excited to give these bags out to our clients. Thank you! Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Johnson & Wales University
