Our research has revealed that UK businesses could benefit from cost savings totalling £1.4bn over the next decade by harnessing the potential of solar energy in unused car park space. It was amazing to be featured recently in The Energyst talking about the huge benefits to businesses that large scale carpark solar installations offer. EV Chargers in the workplace is a hot topic. With government schemes such as the OZEV grant encouraging workplace charging point installation, it's an investment that can make a lot of sense for businesses, particularly if there's opportunity to charge for the electricity being used. We look at the pros and cons of installing EV chargers in our most recent blog post. https://lnkd.in/eiwUNEZG

Trellis recently published an article discussing recent analysis by Net Zero Tracker on the public Net Zero commitments and actions of large corporates. The report found that most big businesses aren't going 'nearly far enough' when it comes to Net Zero. But the recently announced decision from BP, to abandon its original target of cutting oil & gas production by 25% by 2030 to refocus on profitability, is a prime example of the difficult tightrope businesses have to tread. The tradeoff between investment in ESG and sustainable operations, and short-term profitability and keeping investors happy can seem almost impossible to balance. Is it possible to have profit AND planet? We'd argue yes - with smart investment in projects that offer an ROI as well as environmental benefits. Solar is a great example. Not only are you using renewable energy to power your operations, but within a few years the installation is paid for and the energy you receive from it is essentially free. This lowers your operating costs and boosts your bottom line short and long term. Increase the renewable energy generation capacity of your sites by installing panels over your carpark as well as on your roof. Find out more on our website. https://lnkd.in/eFmJw8DU

'Do I need batteries with a solar carport installation?' Is a question we're often asked. It really depends on how the electricity you generate matches the energy demands of your site. If they do align, or the carport always generates less, you probably won't need a battery. If they don't align, or if the energy you generate always exceeds site demands, batteries are recommended. They'll allow you to use all the energy you generate, cutting carbon emissions, reducing running costs and increasing your ROI. Storage and consumption of your own energy also helps to protect you from the steep energy price rises many have experienced as low fixed tariffs end, ultimately protecting your bottom line. While Europe is introducing mandatory sustainability reporting for businesses of a certain size, we aren't likely to get anything similar in the UK until next April when the government is expected to release new guidelines. In the meantime, we've collated the current reporting standards to help you understand what's out there, and what you could use to measure your own progress against sustainability objectives. Installed on Mount Everest at an altitude of 4300m, is this the highest solar carport installation in the world? The entirely-off grid solar carport installation in Mount Everest National Park includes EV charging points and battery storage for electric cars passing along National Route 318 in Tibet. The new EV charging points are intended to support EV-driving tourists who venture into the region, where charging infrastructure is currently limited. https://lnkd.in/eXePQ8uN While there aren't any 4000m peaks in the UK, this pioneering installation illustrates how carports can be an ideal electricity source in an otherwise remote area, providing a perfect off-grid solution for charging EV vehicles. Many businesses are actually struggling to make meaningful progress towards Net Zero. In February 2024, The Carbon Trust surveyed over 400 senior sustainability decision-makers in large businesses across the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and Mexico on the biggest barriers to achieving Net Zero. The report found that while many, if not most, had set Net Zero targets, but were facing significant challenges to actually achieving them. The three main barriers the report identified were: Ambition: Lack of buy-in from senior management Action: The challenges and high cost investment of decarbonising (specifically Scope 3) Accountability: a lack of a standardised framework of reporting and measurement, leading to worry about doing and communicating the wrong thing. Leisure centres: they're important community amenities which also guzzle significant amounts of energy. (Just think about how much electricity is needed to keep that swimming pool at a constant 28C) But since leisure centres often have large and carparks, they're also ideal candidates for solar panels. A lot of solar panels. Installing solar carports in the car park significantly increases the energy generation potential of the site, as The Reef Leisure Centre in North Norfolk proved. Installing solar carports over two thirds of their carpark has provided more than enough electricity for the centre's needs, with 25% going back to the National Grid. Not only that, but the 600 panel installation will avoid an estimated 57 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Local councils have a responsibility to set an example to their communities and local businesses, and installing solar carports at their leisure centres is a great way to do that while contributing significantly to their own Net Zero goals. https://lnkd.in/eHVdE3cu

Very pleased to be featured in Health & Pharma recently, talking about what the pharma industry can do to reduce carbon emissions. The pharma industry is responsible for 52 megatons (yes, that's 52 million tonnes) of carbon dioxide emissions annually. That's roughly 4.5% of total greenouse gas emissions. Given the global impact the industry has, not only through its operations but also supply chain, it's imperative to reduce it in order to ensure the health of humans and the planet in decades to come.
