We are so excited to share that the second-floor framing has gone up and the vision of our beautiful new residential center is slowly coming visually alive. The past two weeks we have been able to see construction unfolding rapidly despite the rain and are cautiously optimistic for our new timeline of operation next year. Here are some pictures of our fabulous Fundraiser Debi (left to right-1st from the left), our Head of Operations, Meghan, our new Executive Director, Shireen, with our construction's Site Supervisor Nate in the 1st picture, and in the 2nd picture, our incredible Founder and Board Chair Evan (5th in the picture) with our amazingly supportive and knowledgeable board members Alison, Ruth, Gaby, Matt and Bruce, who have committed to ensuring we stay true to the vision of creating meaningful change for our youth in crisis.

About us
Sorrel Leaf Healing Center's comprehensive system of care serves the needs of children and adolescents ages seven through eighteen. Our Nonprofit mental health organization offers transformative, compassionate, evidence-based and trauma-informed care for young people experiencing a mental health crisis in Humboldt County, California and the surrounding areas. Our therapeutic approach is rooted in a mindfulness model that focuses on embodied healing and connection to self, each other and the human and natural environments. Residents will leave with new and better tools for emotional regulation and distress tolerance. Some of the modalities we will utilize include dialectical and cognitive behavior therapies, family and group therapy, and somatic/experiential modalities including yoga, music, movement and breathwork, in addition to life skills training, sleep and diet optimization. Through a collaboration with UCSF Benioff’s Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, pediatric psychiatrists will oversee diagnosis and, when indicated, the medical management of mental health disorders. Our aftercare clinic will continue the Center’s healing work over 6-12 months following discharge to prevent relapse and complete the course of therapy.

Three years ago, AAP, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), and Children’s Hospital Association declared an emergency in youth mental health. While we have seen some policy progress, there is still so much work to do to best support the needs of young people. We call on all elected leaders to advance policies that prioritize the healthy mental and emotional development of young people.
