Last week, Kim Olson and I were delighted to spend the day in Sacramento representing SOS Meals on Wheels and MEALS ON WHEELS CALIFORNIA INC at the #CAforALL Day of Action. Celebrating the progress made by the halfway point of the CA Master Plan for Aging, and convening with others from around the State working to prioritize the health, wellbeing and dignity of Californians of all ages and abilities was inspiring and a great opportunity to hear from Xavier Becerra, US Secretary of Health & Human Services, Kim McCoy Wade, Susan DeMarois, Sarita Mohanty, MD, MPH, MBA and others.

Our recent board retreat was a powerful reminder of the dedication and unity driving our mission. 'I’m beyond grateful for the passion and dedication of this board and the entire team. This retreat gave us a chance to come together, with one purpose: to continually strive to uplift and support our community. Together, we're not just delivering meals — we’re delivering care, compassion, and dignity,' shared Pcyeta Stroud, a board member. Blake Spears, our Board President, added, 'Every time we get together as a board, I'm always so impressed how we have such a diverse set of perspectives, but always coalesce into a vision that works for everyone.' We're excited to keep pushing forward with passion and purpose!

We are excited to welcome Kim Olson as SOS Meals on Wheels' first-ever Director of Advocacy!  She brings a wealth of experience in public policy and community advocacy. Kim will lead our efforts to build stronger partnerships with local, state, and federal governments. Kim previously worked with the Oregon Food Bank, where she led efforts to secure over $55 million in government funding. Her expertise will help SOS mobilize new resources, forge essential relationships, and ensure older adults can age in their own homes. Today, we deliver 600,000 meals annually and as our community ages, we face increasing demand for meals and services. We continue to grow our volunteer base and innovate our kitchen to meet the growing needs of local seniors. We are fully engaged in finding new public and private funding sources to meet our community’s needs.  We’re thrilled and deeply grateful to have Kim on board to help advocate for seniors' health, well-being, and dignity. Together, we’re creating a future where every senior in the East Bay has access to the nutrition and support they deserve. Please join us in welcoming Kim! Our team had an incredible time at the MOWA 50th Anniversary Annual Conference in Baltimore! It was, as always, a pleasure to reconnect with colleagues from around the globe. We engaged in inspiring sessions and thought-provoking conversations on fundraising, the role of AI in the nonprofit sector, social connection programs and their impacts, medically tailored meals, and so much more.   Details on the photos below: A group of Meals on Wheels California members joined for a photo at the conference. Charlie Deterline participated in a panel titled "Save More, Solve More, Serve More," alongside Amanda Fowler, MOW LaPorte County; Sylvia Montgomery, Life Care Alliance and moderated by Darell Scott, MBA, MOWA. A group of Meals on Wheels California members enjoyed a fun-filled night at a Baltimore Orioles baseball game. Last week I had the incredible privilege of participating in the Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management (SPNM) program at Harvard Business School Executive Education. As part of a cohort of 165+ nonprofit executives from 16 countries, we came together on the HBS campus for seven days, with a drive and desire to do more, better, than ever before. The discussions that we had, the incredible individuals that I got to know, and the steadfast refusal to accept that what was good enough yesterday will not be today, will continue to provide inspiration and learning for years to come. There are many of this group that I look forward to continuing to engage with and learn from, though none more so than the other six members of my living/discussion group. Paul Bailey Andrea Goddard Rupa Bohra Laura Huot Danyson Tavares Eva Neubauer Alligood Know that I am ever rooting for you, here if you want to discuss a crazy/amazing idea or issue, and better for knowing and learning from each of you. Leadership is indeed a verb!

Thank you to the wonderful volunteers from the Alameda County Department of Adult and Aging Services for helping us honor Older Americans Month! This month, AC volunteers assembled nonperishable snack bags, delivered meals to our vulnerable seniors, and put in some hard work in the kitchen! Huge thank you to everyone making a difference! #OlderAmericansMonth

We are proud to share that this past weekend, our very own Tammy Duran, South Program Manager, was recognized by Assembly member Alex Lee as a 2024 Unsung Hero! Tammy oversees our program serving Fremont, Newark, and Union City, where she oversees the distribution of meals to over 300 homebound adults who rely on SOS Meals on Wheels for nutritious meals and wellness checks. Tammy has been running the Meals on Wheels Program in South Alameda County for nearly 15 years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tammy ensured that there was not a missed day of service.
