Souder, Miller & Associates (SMA) is a professional engineering consulting firm serving western Colorado, eastern Utah, eastern Arizona, and New Mexico. SMA has successfully worked throughout the Rocky Mountains and southwest United States providing civil, structural, and environmental engineering and surveying services for state, municipal, and private clients. SMA's civil and structural engineering services include commercial and municipal site planning and development, concrete foundation and earthen structures, streets, roads and bridges, hydrological studies and hydraulic structures, water distribution and sewer systems, water and wastewater treatment systems, and preparation of construction documents including drawings, specifications, and contracts. In addition, SMA has the capabilities to provide construction support services as may be required to finalize a successful project. SMA's environmental science and engineering division provides complete investigative, analytical, and remediation services. SMA's corporate office is in Albuquerque with branch offices located in throughout New Mexico; Colorado; southeastern Arizona; Moab, Utah; and in El Paso, Texas.   • The New Mexico Rural Water Association’s 14th Annual Conference is this week, October 1st through October 3rd, at the Las Cruces Convention Center! The New Mexico Rural Water Association (NMRWA) is a non-profit organization with over 485 water and wastewater system members, representing over 1,183,000 New Mexicans. The event offers classes designed to provide materials and relevant information to prepare operators for their certifications. SMA and Gallatin staff have long been a part of this event by providing experts in their field to be instructors for some of the classes during the event. It is an exciting opportunity for us to support the organization and advance the education of professionals in the industry. This year our staff will be teaching the following classes: Armando Cordero - Ground Water/Hydrology; Pumps & Motors Art Torrez - Financial Stability & Strategic Compliance Planning for Small Utilities; Wildfire/Catastrophic Weather Issues on Utilities Lilla Reid, P.E. - PER’s Explained Sonja Jamilla - EZ System Mapping for Everyone In addition to being a sponsor of the event, Lilla Reid and Nichole Britt will be at the exhibitor’s booth connecting with both current and potential clients.   • 2024 NMWWA Central School is underway at the Marriott Pyramid North Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico! The school offers classes designed to provide materials and relevant information to operators in preparation for their certifications. Both SMA and Gallatin Operational Solutions LLC staff have a long tradition of supporting the event through their teaching expertise.   • Last week, we had the opportunity to recognize our 2024 SMA Native American STEM Scholarship Recipients at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, in Albuquerque, NM! The Scholarship is annually awarded to Native American students pursuing a four-year degree in STEM fields. This year’s recipients, along with their chosen universities and majors, are: Brooke N. Nez – Carthage College, Nursing Chanel A.K. Nez – University of New Mexico, Pre-Nursing Edwina Martinez – University of New Mexico, Nuclear Engineering Kyle Secody – Vanderbilt University, Biological Sciences                       Kyra Benally – Northern Arizona University, Psychology Taa’Hasbah Largo – University of Alaska Fairbanks, Electrical Engineering Araya Vigil – Texas A&M, Engineering D’Andre Harker – Navajo Technical University, Information Technology Ty Tsinnininnie, Burnell Jones, and Chelena Betoney, who are all three previous scholarship recipients in addition to being current SMA employees had the opportunity to speak at the event. Through their work at SMA, they have been able to give back to the communities they grew up in. They’ve brought water and electricity to communities who had never had it; built roads; and greatly improved the quality of life of the family and community members who grew with and supported them. This Scholarship continues a tradition more than a decade in the making, and we are beyond proud to support these incredible young scholars in pursuing their educational journey.   • We’re excited to be attending the 67th NMML Annual Conference in Clovis, New Mexico! The conference features several workshops and general sessions discussing various topics including Community Outreach, Long Term Planning and Near-Term Action for Water Security, Supporting Housing Development in Local Communities, and much more.
